SCES3336/02 SECTION A BAHAGIAN A Answer ALL questions. Jawab SEMUA soalan. 1. (a) A liquid crystal thermometer is made with a substance that has a chiral nematic phase. Based on the molecular organization of the chiral nematogen, explain how the liquid crystal thermometer works. Jangka suhu cecair hablur dibuat dengan bahan yang mempunyai fasa nematik kiral. Berdasarkan organisasi molekul untuk nematogen kiral, terangkan bagaimana jangka suhu cecair hablur tersebut berfungsi. (5 marks/markah) Rods and discs are the conventional anisotropic shapes for mesogenic materials. In recent studies, banana-shaped mesogens have also been synthesized. Using the following figure as a reference, state four ways to modify the banana-shaped mesogen in order to study the structureproperty relationship. Rod dan cakera adalah bentuk anisotropik konvensional untuk bahanbahan mesogenik. Dalam kajian terkini, mesogen berbentuk pisang juga telah disintesis. Apakah hubungan antara pemalar kenyal dan tertib orientasi untuk sistem nematik? (2 marks/markah) 2. (a) Liquid crystal directors are influenced by magnetic field. Describe the alignment process of the directors in a nematic phase to that in a smectic A phase at varying temperature using the deuterium NMR spectroscopy. (a) Examine the following mesogens: Teliti mesogen-mesogen berikut:- 1 2 (i) Provide a definition for chromonic liquid crystals. What is the driving force for the phase formation and what kind of aggregate do they form? Berikan definisi cecair hablur kromonik. Apakah daya penggerak pembentukan fasa dan apakah jenis agregat yang dibentuk. (10 marks/markah)

SCES3336/06 (ii) Indicate the shape of mesogens 1 and 2, and draw the molecular assembly in the nematic and the hexagonal phase. What is the difference in terms of structure between a chromonic nematic and a calamitic nematic phase. Nyatakan bentuk mesogen 1 dan 2, kemudian lukiskan penyusunan molekulnya dalam fasa nematik dan heksagonal. Apakah perbezaan dari segi penyusunan mesogen kromonik dengan molekul kalamitik dalam fasa nematik. (12 marks/markah) Explain the relationship between the director, n, and the orientational order for the nematic phase. Terangkan perhubungan diantara direktor dengan tertib orientasi bagi fasa nematik. (3 marks/markah) 4. (a) Mesogen A is a molecule that can form cubic (V 1 ), hexagonal (H 1 ) and lamellar (L α ) phases at certain concentrations. List the tools that may be appropriate to identify the phases. Explain how the 2 H-NMR can be used to determine the phases and describe the spectral shape for each phase. Mesogen A adalah molekul yang boleh membentuk fasa kubik (V 1 ), heksagonal (H 1 ) dan lamellar (L α ) pada kepekatan tertentu. Senaraikan alat-alat yang mungkin sesuai untuk mengenalpasti fasa-fasa tersebut. Terangkan bagimana 2 H-NMR boleh digunakan untuk menentukan fasafasa tersebut serta terangkan bentuk spektra setiap fasa tersebut.
