SUMMARY INFORMATION POST: SPECIALTY DENTIST IN ORTHODONTICS BASE: INVERCLYDE ROYAL HOSPITAL FIED TERM 12 MONTHS (2 PA s) POST REFERENCE: 23355D Applicants are invited for the part time post of Specialty Dentist in Orthodontics to undertake clinical sessions at Inverclyde Royal Hospital, Greenock, one day per week. This post presents an excellent opportunity to carry out a range of orthodontic treatment for patients in Inverclyde under the supervision of a consultant orthodontist. The successful applicant would be expected to work one day per week in the department carrying out orthodontic treatment. The caseload would depend on the experience of the successful applicant but would include some removable and fixed appliance cases. If the applicant was not already on the Specialist list then he or she would be encouraged to enrol in one of the courses for Dentists with a Special Interest in Orthodontics. Applicants will be required to have full registration with the General Dental Council, and should have a minimum of 4 years post graduation with a minimum of 2 years full time experience in Orthodontics. Specialty Dentist in Orthodontics 0.2 WTE 1 post 1. Glasgow and the Surrounding Area Glasgow, with a population of around 740,000 is Scotland s largest city, and on of Europe s liveliest with a varied and colourful social and cultural life which can cater for every taste. Glasgow is a city of contrasts; the bustle of a major commercial and business centre, the greenery of parks and gardens, and a wealth of art galleries, museums, cinemas and theatres. Newcomers quickly feel at home in this vibrant and friendly city. Of particular note is the University s Hunterian Museum which is the oldest public museum in Scotland. The Hunterian Art Gallery has important are collections and contains a reconstruction of Charles Rennie Mackintosh s own house. Glasgow has an extensive road and rail public transport system with one of the largest commuter rail networks outside London and its own underground railway, the subway, which serves the University and the centre of the city. 2. Oral Health Directorate NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde single NHS system working on 1 st April 2006, and is the largest Health Board in Scotland. The Oral Health Directorate has recently become part of East Dunbartonshire Community Health Partnership (CHP). The Oral Health Directorate includes the Dental Hospital, which has close working links with the University of Glasgow Dental School, the University of Glasgow and the Regional Maxillofacial Unit at the Southern General Hospital. The directorate also has responsibility for Community and Salaried Dental Services and General Dental Services, with and annual budget of some 100 million. It also incorporates: - Dental Public Health - Oral Health Improvement - Acute Hospital Orthodontics Inverclyde Royal Hospital Inverclyde Royal Hospital is situated in Greenock, Inverclyde approximately 30 minutes from Glasgow. It serves a population of around 125,000 in the urban and rural areas of Inverclyde, Largs, Bute and the Cowal Peninsula. The hospital provides a range of services including inpatient beds, general medical and surgical specialties, orthopaedics, ophthalmology, a Community Maternity Unit and Accident & Emergency. It provides a local specialist service in Orthodontics and Oral Surgery. The Glasgow Dental Hospital & School is the centre for specialist dental advice and treatment within the NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde Health Board area and there are strong links between the Orthodontic department in Inverclyde Royal Hospital and Glasgow Dental Hospital & School The Dental Hospital is part of the Oral Health Directorate structure. The Dental Staff Association meets regularly. All departments hold regular Clinical Governance and Audit meetings. 4
4. The Department of Orthodontics The Department of Orthodontics is situated in the Out Patient Department on the ground floor of Inverclyde Royal Hospital. The department consists of 2 adjacent dental surgeries, a small office and a dental laboratory. All routine orthodontic treatment is carried out in the department, with some patients attending Multidisciplinary clinics at Glasgow Dental Hospital. Patients for Minor Oral Surgery procedures can be referred to the Oral Surgery department which is also on the ground floor of Inverclyde Royal Hospital. 5. The Post The post holder will contribute to all aspects of the clinical activity of the Orthodontic Department. The post holder should have been qualified in dentistry for at least 4 years with some clinical experience in Orthodontics. A Membership or Fellowship from one of the Royal Colleges is desirable. 6. Responsible to Professionally responsible to Jill White, Consultant Orthodontist, and managerially responsible to Catherine Marlin, Clinical Services Manager. 7. Staffing Consultants Locum Consultant Specialist Dentist Dental Nurse Laboratory Technician Hygienist 1.0 WTE (0.6 IRH, 0.4 GDH) 1.0 WTE 0.2 WTE (this post) 1.8 WTE 0.4 WTE 0.1 WTE 8. Relationships with other departments Good relationships exist with the Oral Surgery department at Inverclyde Royal Hospital and all departments in the Dental Hospital as well as with the Regional Maxillofacial Unit at the Southern General. 9. Teaching & Research Research opportunities exist for those interested however research would not form an essential part of this post. Excellent library facilities are available within Glasgow Dental Hospital and School and the University. 10. Clinical Audit The post holder will be expected to participate and contribute to the Clinical Audit Programme. Audit meetings are held within the Dental Hospital and School; these are an essential component of Clinical Governance. Information from these meeting is shared locally. 5
11. Timetable The post will be undertaken as one 2-session post, with 2 clinical sessions. There is no oncall or out of hours commitment associated with this post. 12. Other Duties The post holder may be asked to assist in postgraduate teaching and or continuing education according to experience. The post holder may be expected to deputise for absent colleagues. 13. Administration Administrative duties include those which are associated with the care of patients and the running of the department. The Consultants work co-operatively with the Directorate Management in the efficient running of services and the post holder will be expected to share with Consultant colleagues the responsibility of advising the Clinical Service Manager on clinical matters.
