He was 32, newly married and waiting for a kidney transplant. A couple of years earlier he had done what we are all told to do, he went to the doctor and had a routine medical checkup. His cholesterol was a little high, 237, so the doctor convinced him that it was vital that he start taking a statin. The doctor did not check his CRP to find out if there was a genuine danger of forming atherosclerosis. The doctor did not test for particle size and number. The doctor did not examine the health of the arteries or test for any blockage. The doctor did not see any significance in the muscle pain the patient began to have. It turned out to be a reaction to the medication and the patient's kidneys shut down. Of course when people hear this story, they think that it is terrible that the doctor misread the patient's symptoms and did not notice the reaction. I think the real sin here is the fact that the patient was given a medication that he Diet, lifestyle, and omega 3 fatty acids do more to prevent heart disease than statins do. had no business taking. Before statin sales became a $27 billion dollar per year industry, a normal cholesterol level was 250. Statins do very little to prevent heart attacks in people without existing heart disease, and half of the people who have heart a t t a c k s h a v e n o r m a l cholesterol levels. Taking fish oil actually does more to prevent heart disease than statins do. Instead of treating a patient, the doctor treated a number and destroyed a young man's health. Statins destroy muscle. Most people who take them have some kind of pain, which is probably why the doctor did not take the patient's pain complaint seriously. This issue of The Better Health News is going to be dedicated to the work Dr. Mark Houston is doing and the approach he has created to help people deal with high cholesterol and atherosclerosis. If my patient had known about Dr. Houston and his work, his kidneys would still be working.

T H E B E T T E R H E A L T H N E W S K I L L 2 B I R D S W I T H 1 S T O N E I was looking at one of the chiropractic group conversations on Linkedin. Someone had asked the group for ideas on what to sell in the office to increase income. He got all kinds of advice about selling back braces, pillows, vitamins and other products. He was told that it is easier to sell something to an existing customer than it is to create a new customer. The whole dialog struck me as strange, I wondered to myself, "Is this guy a healer or a retail outlet?" I heard somewhere that 80% of all chiropractors are struggling to pay the bills. Yet some practices thrive. The docs who do well are the ones who REALLY work at getting their patients better. They may sell supplements in their practices, but the primary goal is to help the patient. There is a difference between giving a patient a supplement that addresses a health problem and hustling Juice Plus in your waiting room. One of the reasons I write this newsletter for Biotics Research is that their focus is on the therapeutic benefit to the patients and on the "health" of the doctors' practices. Sure, they want to sell supplements, but the benefit to the patients and doctors is the primary concern. They have a new product line that you can "sell" in your office but also provide a health benefit to your patients that simply is not available elsewhere. There are approximately 13 million Americans who take statin medication at a cost of $27 billion annually. For the most part they are not really being helped and the health of their hearts and arteries are not being addressed. Most of them are being treated like the patient mentioned on page one, like numbers. Very few are taking anything that will help to undo the damage caused by the statin. Very few are taking anything that directly addresses the health of the arteries. Most of them are taking the medication based on lab work that is inadequate. This is an opportunity for a doctor to do some very good work AND sell products. So to my friend on Linkedin, you can sell something in your office and actually improve the length and quality of life for your patients in a way that no one else is doing. Granted, there is a little bit of a learning curve, but Biotics Research will literally hold your hand and make you proficient in this topic. The products they have developed with Dr. Houston are easy to use and there is excellent associated educational material available for you. And, as always, the sales reps at Biotics are all about helping to educate doctors. It also has constituents to improve circulation and to help undo the damage done by statins. Biotics Research will provide you with a CD that contains an interview with Dr. Houston explaining this product. Lipid-Sirt R : This product contains constituents that help to naturally lower cholesterol. There is also CD that contains an interview with Dr. Houston explaining this product. Red Rice Yeast: This product has been shown to reduce cholesterol. It works on the same enzyme that statins suppress, but it does not interfere with the production of Coenzyme Q10 the way that statins do. EFA-Sirt Supreme R : Fish oil helps prevent platelet aggregation, helps to normalize lipid profiles and actually help prevent heart attacks. This product combines GLA, EPA and DHA, along with vitamin E concentrated in a gamma tocopherol, making it a superior cardiovascular product to fish oil alone. There is a little bit of a learning curve here, but the people at Biotics Research are there to help you. Whole Health Web even has a little video that gives an overview of dealing with these patients (control/click to follow link: http:// www.wholehealthweb.com/what-your-doctor-wonttell-you-about-cholesterol) Cholesterol, HDL, LDL = Inadequate Diagnosis Most of us believe that if cholesterol is low, our HDL (so called "good" cholesterol) is high and our LDL (so called "bad" cholesterol) is low, we are safe from atherosclerosis and heart disease. It turns out that this way of looking at cholesterol and disease of the heart and arteries is out of date. The likelihood of cholesterol causing plaques is related to the size and number of the particles. Doctors can now order cholesterol panels that include the size and number of cholesterol particles. These new panels give a MUCH better diagnosis and are much better at predicting future problems with the heart and arteries. The standard cholesterol panel is inadequate and does not accurately predict if a patient is going to have blockage in his or her arteries. When testing for cholesterol you absolutely need to have a panel that includes the size and number of particles. Statin (cholesterol lowering) medication does nothing to decrease particle size and number. However, it turns out that omega-3 fatty acids help to reduce the size and number of particles. This is why they outperform statins in reducing the chance for a heart attack. CRP: Inflammation is More Important Than Cholesterol While it is common for doctors to test cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL and LDL, it is rare for them to test for CRP. CRP is C-reactive protein and is a measure of inflammation. The two largest risk factors for atherosclerosis are inflammation and the size (and number) of the cholesterol particles. If you want to really know if someone is at risk for atherosclerosis (and the possibility of heart attack or stroke), you need to test the particle size and number when you test for cholesterol and you need to test CRP.

T H E B E T T E R H E A L T H N E W S Page 4 P U T T I N G I T A L L T O G E T H E R I know a chiropractor who takes insurance and runs a musculoskeletal practice. His business is down and he is really stressed out, yet he feels too intimidated to add a nutritional component to his practice. There are 13 million Americans taking statins right now. Most of them have not been told to take coenzyme Q10 and carnitine to prevent muscle damage. If you did nothing but offer these two nutrients to your patients on statins, you would financially benefit and you would be helping the patients to prevent heart failure and avoid some of the serious sideeffects of the statin. You could give the patient VasculoSirt R, which contains both nutrients, and also helps prevent plaquing and improve circulation. With a little bit of extra knowledge you can do an amazing job at preventing atherosclerosis and at undoing the damage done by traditional medical therapy. First, do the right labwork: Simply testing cholesterol, HDL, LDL and triglycerides does not do a very good job of predicting the development of atherosclerosis. You need a panel that looks at both the size and number of particles (see the article on the back page for more). You should also look at C-reactive protein, or CRP, which is a measure of inflammation. The combination of small particles and high CRP means there is a very high risk of atherosclerosis. Second, see if you can reduce cholesterol naturally: Lipid-Sirt R has several components that help reduce cholesterol naturally, without the side effects and damage that can come with statin therapy. Third, address the problems correctly: Taking a statin does nothing for particle size or for reducing CRP. CRP is best addressed by diet and lifestyle changes. Diet and lifestyle changes, along with the proper essential fatty acid (like EFA-Sirt Supreme TM ) will address the issue of particle size. VasculoSirt R helps to undo the damage to the arteries. Fourth, protect the patient: If the patient is taking a statin, give them VasculoSirt R because it will help protect the arterial lining, AND provide nutrients like coenzyme Q10 and carnitine that will help prevent side effects and damage from the drug. Fifth, educate your patients: Whole Health Web has made a patient education slideshow available for you to use. They have also created a report that you can give out as a handout to your patients on statins. These will be available through Biotics Research. You can also get the CDs of the interview with Dr. Houston. Patients will appreciate the service that you are giving them. I hate to talk about this in terms of practice building or income, but you know how many of your patients are on cholesterol lowering medication. Now you have something to "sell" in your office--quality and length of life. To order useful products for your patients, call us at for product information. Get it for FREE WholeHealthWeb.com

You can do a better panel very inexpensively through Professional Co-op (go to www.professionalco-op.com, or call 866-999- 4041). For $19 you can have a CRP preformed and for $69 you can get their VAP Cholesterol test. The expanded test will include total apob100, LDL cholesterol size pattern, total apoai, LP(a) and much more. This test will tell you not only the usual parameters found in a cholesterol panel, it will tell you about size, and particle number. It will give you a true idea of your patients risk factors. CRP is much more predictive of a future heart attack than is cholesterol. It is a test that should be run on all of your patients who may be at risk for atherosclerosis and heart disease. Just like Biotics Research, Professional Co-op is happy to provide you with educational information about their tests, and much more. There are also hundreds of draw stations throughout the country, so you do not even have to do blood draws in your office if you do not want to. Because they represent a group of doctors, they are able to negotiate very low rates on their blood tests. They are a wonderful resource for any health practitioner.
