AGENDA for 03/06/14 AGENDA: 1. 3.4.2. What is the Probability? OBJECTIVES: 1. Use pedigrees and Punnett squares to calculate the probability than an individual will inherit sickle cell disease HOMEWORK: Due Fri, 03/07 1. 3.4.2 Activity Packet 2. 3.4.2 Career Journal Unit 3 Exam on Tues, 03-11

Essential Questions for 3.4.1 1. How are pedigrees used to track diseases? 2. Why does sickle cell disease run in families, yet is not present in every generation?

Activity Objectives 3.4.1. 1. Analyze the gel electrophoresis results obtained from the Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphisms of Anna Garcia s family members 2. Create a pedigree for Anna Garcia depicting the occurrence of sickle cell anemia within her family

3.4 Key Terms 1. Allele 2. Chromosome 3. Dominant Trait 4. Gene 5. Genotype 6. Heredity 7. Pedigree 8. Phenotype 9. Punnett Square 10.Recessive Trait

Essential Questions for 3.4.2 3. How can doctors and genetic counselors calculate the probability of a child inheriting a disease?

Activity Objectives 3.4.2. 1. Calculate the probability that an individual has or will receive a particular trait by examining pedigree charts and using Punnett squares

3.4.2 Activity Checklist 1. 3.4.2. Part 1: Predicted Results (NB) 2 2. 3.4.2. Part 2: Experimental Results (NB) 2 3. 3.4.2. Part 3: Probability in Pedigrees (NB) 2 4. 3.4.2. Career Journals scored separately Total = 6

3.4.2. Activity Directions

3.4.2. Part 1: Predicted Results (NB) 1. Refer to curriculum file for more detailed instructions 2. Refer to steps 1-12 3. Directions for making Punnett squares and calculating the probabilities are on the curriculum file. 4. Clearly label the Punnett squares and probabilities in your NB.

3.4.2. Part 2: Experimental Results (NB) 1. Refer to curriculum file for more detailed instructions 2. Refer to steps 13-17 3. Open the class data chart file labeled 3.3.1. Class Data 4. Calculate the percent of children with sickle cell anemia from the experimental results (step 14) 5. Calculate the percent of children that are carriers from the experimental results (step 15) 6. Show your work in your NB

3.4.2. Part 3: Probability in Pedigrees (NB) 1. Refer to curriculum file for more detailed instructions 2. Refer to steps 18 3. Open the Pedigree Resource Sheet from the previous activity (3.4.1) 4. Analyze the pedigrees (1 and 2) in the curriculum file. Redraw the pedigrees in your NB 5. Draw the Punnett squares, show the calculations and answer the questions (step 19)

3.4.2. Conclusion Questions 1. How does your predicted percent chance that an offspring would have sickle cell anemia or be a carrier compare to your experimental results? 2. Explain how a genetics counselor or a doctor could use these calculations of probability to counsel prospective parents. 3. Anna s mother passed away three years ago, so she was unavailable for genetic testing. Based upon Anna s family pedigree that you created in the previous activity, determine her mother s possible genotypes and phenotypes related to sickle cell anemia. Explain your reasoning and describe the information you used to make your prediction. (see the pedigree chart in the curriculum file) 4. Juan s family has a history of sickle cell disease. His father died of sickle cell disease complications when Juan was six years old. He remembers his father being in great pain. Juan marries Gina. Gina s maternal grandmother and paternal grandfather had sickle cell disease, but neither of her parents has the disease. Juan does not want to have children because he is convinced they will have sickle cell disease. Gina is not so sure. They have come to you for advice about having whether or not to have children. Based on your calculations of the probability of their child getting sickle cell disease, what is your advice? Show your calculations and explain your reasoning for your response. It may be helpful for you to draw pedigrees and possible Punnett squares for both Juan s and Gina s families.
