Integumentary System Chapter four Medical Terminology Hit # 141 Anatomy of the Skin Epidermis = outer layer of skin. Melanin = color or pigmentation of the skin. Dermis= inner layer of skin. Sweat glands = tiny, coiled, tubular structures the emerge through pores on the skin surface. Sebaceous gland = secrete sebum (oil) into the hair follicles where the hair shafts pass through the dermis. 1

Combining forms Cutane/o derm/o dermat/o = skin Hidr/o = sweat Kerat/o = horny tissue, hard Onych/o Ungu/o = nail Seb/o = sebum (oil) Trich/o = hair Aden/o = gland Aut/o = self Bi/o = life Combining forms Coni/o = dust Crypt/o = hidden Heter/o = other Myc/o = fungus Necr/o = death Pachy/o = thick Rhytid/o = wrinkles Staphyl/o = grape like clusters Strept/o = twisted chains Xer/o = dry 2

Prefixes Epi- = on, upon, over Intra- = within Para- = beside, beyond, around Per- = through Sub- = under, below Suffixes -coccus = berry shaped bacteria -ectomy = excision or surgical removal -ia = diseased or abnormal state, condition of -itis = inflammation -malacia = softening -opsy = view of or viewing -orrhea = flow, excessive discharge -phagia = eating, or swallowing -plasty = surgical repair 3

Disease & Disorder Dermatitis = inflammation of the skin. Dermatoconiosis = abnormal condition of skin, caused by dust. Dermatofibroma= fibrous tumor of skin. Leiodermia = smooth skin. Onychocryptosis = abnormal condition of a hidden nail (ingrown nail). Onychomalacia = softening of the nail. Onychophagia = eating the nails or biting Disease & Disorder Terms Abrasion= scraping away of the skin. Abscess = localized collection of pus. Acne= inflammatory disease, sebaceous gland & hair follicle involvement. Candidiasis = infection of skin, caused by the yeast-like fungus. Carbuncle = skin infection, cluster of boils, causes by staphylococcal bacteria (grape-like). Cellulitis = inflammation of connective tissue, caused by infection, redness, swelling, fever 4

Disease & Disorder Terms Eczema = noninfectious, redness, blisters, scabs and itching Fissure = slit or crack-like sore in the skin Gangrene = death of tissue. Herpes= virus, fever blisters, shingles. Impetigo= superficial skin infection, pustules. Kaposi s sarcoma = cancerous, starting on skin, lymph nodes, and internal organs, associated with AIDS patients. Disease & Disorder Terms Laceration = torn, ragged-edged wound. Psoriasis= red lesions covered with silvery scales Scabies = caused by the itch mite. Scleroderma = chronic hardening of connective tissue of skin and body organs. Tinea= fungus infection ringworm. Urticaria = itching skin eruption 5

Surgical Terms Biopsy = removal of tissue and viewed under a microscope. Dermatoautoplasty = repair using one s own skin. Dermatoplasty = surgical repair of the skin Onychectomy = excision of a nail. Rhytidoplasty = surgical repair of wrinkles Abbreviations Bx= biopsy BCC = basal cell carcinoma CMV= cytomegalovirus sc= subcutaneous SLE= systemic lupus erythematosis Staph= staphylococcus Strep= streptococcus SqCCa = squamous cell carcinoma 6

Complementary Terms #1 Dermatologist = physician who specializes in skin. Dermatology = study of skin. Dermatome = instrument used to cut skin. Epidermal = pertaining to upon the skin. Hypodermic = pertaining to under the skin. Intradermal = pertaining to within the skin. Leukoderma = white skin (more then normal). Necrosis = death of skin Complementary Terms #2 Percutaneous = through the skin. Staphylococcus = bacteria, grape-like. Streptococcus = bacteria in twisted chains. Subcutaneous = under the skin. Xanthoderma = yellow skin, jaundice. Adipose = fat. Albino= white. Allergy = hypersensitivity to a substance. Alopecia = baldness. 7

Complementary Terms #3 Cicatrix = scar. Debridement = removal dead tissue or foreign matter from an open wound. Decubitus ulcer = bedsore, open area of skin. Dermabrasion = procedure to remove skin scars with abrasive material (like sandpaper). Diaphoresis = profuse sweating. Edema= swelling due to accumulation of fluid. Emollient = agent to soften or smooth skin. Complementary Terms #4 Induration = abnormal hard spot. Jaundice= yellow looking skin. Keloid= overgrowth of scar tissue. Macule = flat, colored spot on the skin. Nevus= pigmented area on skin, birthmark. Papule= small solid skin elevation, pimple. Pruritus = severe itching. Pustule= elevation, containing pus. 8
