Course Information Target Audience This conference is designed for those who work with youth participating in sports including physicians, physical therapists, occupational therapists, personal trainers, certified athletic trainers, and certified strength and conditioning specialists. Keynote Speakers is a board certified sports medicine physician at. He s also a team physician for The University of Akron and Hudson High School, as well as an associate professor at Northeast Ohio Medical University. Dr. Eddy completed his residency in Pediatrics at West Virginia University and fellowship in Sports Medicine at Akron Children s. He received his medical degree and did his undergraduate work at West Virginia University. Stephen T. Graef, PhD Steve Graef, PhD is a licensed counseling psychologist in Ohio specializing in sport, performance and common psychological illnesses such as depression, anxiety and adjustment. He received his bachelor s degree in psychology from The Ohio State University (OSU) where he was also a member of the 2002 National Championship Football Team. He then went on to complete both his master s and doctoral degrees in counseling psychology at The University of Akron. Dr. Graef works primarily with OSU student-athletes and collaborates with other campus resources to ensure consistent and quality care throughout OSU and the greater Columbus communities. In addition, he is owner and founder of Mindurance, an online sport and counseling psychology practice. A former student-athlete himself, Dr. Graef recognizes the important role that psychology has in sport and performance, as well as in mental and physical well-being. John DeWitt, PT, AT, SCS In addition to treating sports medicine patients and athletes at The Ohio State University campus, Dr. DeWitt holds an appointment as an assistant clinical professor and director of residencies in the Division of Physical Therapy at The Ohio State University with a focus on sports and orthopedic physical therapy. John is board certified in sports physical therapy and has been practicing since 1997 treating athletes of all levels of competition. He spent 2 years as a seasonal assistant athletic trainer with the New England Patriots and has worked with the United States Olympic Committee. Outside of his clinical responsibilities, he sits on several national boards for postprofessional physical therapy education within the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA). He is the 2008 recipient of the Ohio Physical Therapy Association s, Physical Therapist of the Year and the 2009 APTA Sports Section s New Horizon award winner.

Course Objectives 1. Recognize a more global approach to diagnosing/treating patellofemoral pain syndrome and learn helpful running technique tips to manage the pain. 2. Recognize the signs/symptoms of common clinical, injury and performancerelated concerns regarding sports psychology and summarize effective treatments related to these concerns. 3. Identify pathologic abnormalities associated with patellofemoral instability and explain various surgical procedures addressing these pathologies. 4. Examine risk factors and causes of patellar instability to help identify effective non-operative treatment approaches. 5. Recognize, initiate management and direct treatment for ankle/foot/heel injuries in athletes. 6. Identify risk factors of Chronic Ankle Instability (CAI) and review best practice consideration for non-op management. 7. Define MUPS, review theories explaining the cause and identify treatment strategies. 8. Analyze the role of vitamins and minerals in sport performance and identify athletes that may be at-risk for not meeting nutrient needs. 9. Determine the most common foot/ankle injuries that may require an operation and review surgical techniques. 10. Examine the use of biologicals in a clinical setting and types of injuries that may benefit from the use. 11. Compare the components of general fitness and appropriate progressions for teaching and training athletes. 12. Examine what makes the lateral side of the knee different and review current treatments of Discoid Lateral Meniscus 13. Recognize common musculoskeletal injury patterns in wrestling, including pre-patellar bursitis and collateral ligament injuries of the knee. 14. Summarize personal staff responsibilities for proper sideline management and review communication guidelines to other medical parties. 15. Assess current guidelines for evaluation, diagnosis and initial management of athletes with concussions.
