Why we need Superheroes We all hope to give our children the best start in life to support them, take care of them emotionally and help them grow. What then happens to our family when one parent dies? When they have taken their own life or been given the devastating news of a terminal illness? Finding the words to explain this to a young, vulnerable child is almost impossible, which is why an organisation such as Beechwood Cancer Care is so important. Beechwood Cancer Care find the words to help to put a child s life back together. Their family counsellors work with children and young people to help them through the illness or bereavement of a parent or sibling; keeping communication open and working through the anger, frustration and devastation which this very difficult time can bring. Beechwood is a free service that supports families at the point of need across Greater Manchester. Their service is currently stretched to capacity, seeing over 100 children a year. With your invaluable help however, this number could be doubled. Life is unpredictable - if you re lucky enough not to have had devastation affect your family, it is easy to forget about services such as Beechwood. Regardless of this, the importance and impact they have in rebuilding a families life after a terminal diagnosis or the loss of a loved one goes beyond words. In partnership with

Matt, father of 3, from Prestwich Daniel, age 10, from Stockport Caroline, mum of 2, from Marple None of us are prepared for anything in life but you are definitely not prepared for your partner dying and leaving you with three children. Beechwood was Matt s safety net. In Beechwood, Matt had someone in whom he could trust his three children to confide in, someone to deal with all their questions and fears. Coming to Beechwood gave me somebody there I could let my feelings out to. I can t be normal, and that s something that eats at me, but I can talk about it here. Daniel s mum was murdered when he was just three years old. He was too young to understand why his mum was not there when he came home from nursery. When Daniel s frustrations became too much, he considered running away. Beechwood have since helped explain to Daniel that his Mum didn t leave because she wanted too, but because of reasons that were out of her control - talking Daniel through the things that bother him and helping him find comfort. My main concern was how do I tell my children that I have cancer. They were just too young and wouldn t have understood. How can a mum tell her children there is a possibility that she might die? Caroline felt like it would have been impossible to break the devastating news to her young children. The counsellors at Beechwood supported Caroline through this process, helping phrase the dialogue in a way her children could comprehend. Thanks to Beechwood, this was one less worry for Caroline.

Putting your superpowers to work How your money will make a difference 15 pays for a plain memory box, which would be decorated and hold treasured items of a lost parent 20 100 pays for a child to create a 3D memory letter 500 pays for transportation for a child to and from Beechwood pays for one child to have a block of 10 counselling sessions at Beechwood 1000 enables us to hold a family memory evening, celebrating the life of the lost parent 2500 enables us to provide equipment to make memory quilts for 15 children made from clothing or bedding from their lost parent that they can wrap around them in times of sadness 5000 pays for our aim of providing regular creative therapy sessions, giving children a positive way of dealing with their grief and moving forward with their lives

Join our league of Superheroes This is your chance to step up for Cash for Kids, reveal the superhero in you or your company and make a real difference to local children. You can hold a super quiz, a pancake breakfast, or run a superhero dress up day at your school or nursery. Maybe do a superhero challenge and get sponsored by your family and friends. Take a look at our above and beyond fundraising ideas (Page 8). The wackier your idea, the better and no contribution is too small - working together we can make a huge difference. Your activity can take place at any time, but ideally between 11th and 15th May. We might even be able to come and see you so let us know how you are getting involved by emailing: cashforkids@key103.co.uk

Memory Wall Creating your memory wall A great way to help raise money is to build your very own butterfly wall of memories. The butterfly symbolises transformation, joy and hope a great thing to fill your office or workplace with! All you need to do is set up a designated area and encourage colleagues to purchase their butterflies for 2 or any donation they can afford. Ask people to write down their own memories of lost loved ones and add it to the beautiful wall of remembrance. The more memories added to the wall, the closer we are to reaching our goal of providing the best support to bereaved children across Greater Manchester.

Above and Beyond Top Five Fundraisers for Schools: 1. Wall Stuck charge a fee for lengths of duct tape that particpants can use to stick a high profile volunteer like the Head teacher of your School to the wall. 2. Decide with Donations Students and teachers vote to decide with donations, the choice with most donations wins the vote. It could be a vote to decide on what task the volunteer will receive, like a pie in the face, bean bath or ice bath, or vote which volunteer has to do the undesirable action. 5. Stop that Sound Play a certain song eg Justin Bieber out through the school in between each lesson, students (or teachers!) have to raise a certain amount to stop the horrific sound. The sky is the limit! Maximise your fundraising total: 3. Principal challenge See if your Head teacher or a favourite teacher will agree to do something drastic for example gunge the teacher, if you reach your fundraising goals. 4. World Record Attempt Go for a world record challenge like world s largest game of musical chairs, biggest scavenger hunt or longest football match. Get the school council on board Send out a letter to parents Set a target and hang up a Barometer Download our Beechwood video to show in class Make it a Superhero week with lunch time challenges
