Infection Causing Germs are Everywhere Common infectious diseases are caused by germs such as bacteria, fungi or viruses and includes respiratory infections (colds, flu, sore throat, pneumonia), stomach infections (dysentery, diarrhoea, vomiting, enteric fever), skin infections (rash, boils, pimples), eye infections (pink-eye, conjunctivitis) and ear infections. Germs are most often spread by hands through person-to-person contact. Standards of hygiene, such as frequency of hand-washing, handling of food and water, proper disposal of faeces and other waste materials, care of at risk groups and people who are infected, are key factors determining disease burden. Not just ordinary people, but especially Health-care workers (Doctors and Nurses) can frequently contaminate their hands by touching the environment or patients skin during routine care activities, sometimes even despite glove use, exposing themselves and those they come into contact with to a high risk of transmission of infections. Germs are getting tougher, more resistant (e.g. MRSA, NDM-1, TDR) and spreading across host species (e.g. SARS and Swine Flu) making prevention even more relevant than cure. Communicable disease burden is best reduced by programmes that integrate hygiene promotion with improvements in water quality and availability and sanitation. 1,2 Handwashing with an effective soap and clean water is the simplest made of prevention that is critical in efforts to reach the UN s Millennium Development Goals by improving health, reducing poverty and decreasing child mortality. 3

Society is changing Social, demographic and other changes occurring within the global population affect our resistance to infection. The demand for different and exotic foods stimulates increasing movement of foodstuffs from one region to another and creates problems in controlling microbial quality. Increasing population mobility due to factors such as long distance travel means that virulant germs can move rapidly across the world, making it difficult to contain epidemics related to novel pathogenic strains, such as SARS and H1N1. New germs can spread quickly through communities. 1 Germs are getting stronger Reports indicate that germs thought to be under control (e.g. TB) are re-emerging stronger (TDR-TB). In May 2011, the World Health Assembly recognised the re-emergence of cholera as a significant global public health problem. Globally, the number of deaths from cholera rose from 52% from 2009 to 2010. 4 Emergence of some strains of already known germs is a growing concern because they have developed altered or enhanced virulence. Some new strains of germs such as methicillin resistant S. aureus (MRSA) and NDM1 have acquired the ability to resist the action of antibiotics, hindering treatment. The most recently emergent infections such as swine flu are caused by viruses like H1N1. New strains result from mixing of different versions of the virus and transfer from animal to human hosts. These strains have enhanced ability to spread from person-to-person. 5 Good hygiene through a simple process of regular hand-washing is our first line of defence against the proliferation of germs.

What Can We Do About Rapidly Spreading Infections? Leading experts and studies have shown that Hand Hygiene can have significant benefits in terms of reducing the incidence of gastrointestinal, respiratory and skin infections. 6 Handwashing is recognised by the World Health Organisation (WHO) and Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as one of the most important means of preventing the spread of infection-causing germs. 7 Hand-washing for Healthcare Professionals: Healthcare Professionals (Doctors and Nurses) are routinely exposed to germs and therefore susceptible to contracting and spreading infection. Washing hands with ordinary soaps may not adequately remove germs from skin. 8 The WHO Guidelines on Hand Hygiene in Health Care explain that: Handwashing with plain soap failed to remove pathogens from the hands of health care workers Handwashing with plain soap can result in a paradoxical increase in bacterial counts on the skin. 8 Scientific literature provides evidence to show that germ protection soaps are more effective than plain soaps in germ removal. 9 Germs are getting stronger and with plain soaps we can no longer be 100% certain.
