Condition Signs Symptoms Causes Conjunctivitis Viral Normal vision, normal pupil size Mild to no pain, diffuse Adenovirus (most common), and reaction to light, diffuse hyperemia, occasional gritty enterovirus, etc conjunctival injections (redness), discomfort with mild itching, preauricular lymphadenopathy, watery to serous discharge, lymphoid follicle on the photophobia (uncommon), often undersurface of the eyelid unilateral at onset with second eye involved within one or two days

Condition Signs Symptoms Causes Conjunctivitis Bacterial (acute and chronic) Eyelid edema, preserved Mild to moderate pain with Common pathogens in visual acuity, conjunctival stinging sensation, red eye children: Streptococcus injection, normal pupil with foreign body sensation, pneumoniae, Haemophilus reaction, no corneal mild to moderate purulent influenzae involvement discharge, mucopurulent secretions with bilateral glued eyes upon awakening (best predictor) Common pathogen in adults: Staphylococcus aureus

Condition Signs Symptoms Causes Conjunctivitis Allergic Visual acuity preserved, pupils Bilateral eye involvement; Airborne pollens, dust mites, reactive to light, conjunctival painless tearing; intense animal dander, feathers, other injection, no corneal itching; diffuse redness; stringy environmental antigens involvement, large cobblestone or ropy, watery discharge papillae under upper eyelid, chemosis

Condition Signs Symptoms Causes Other causes Dry eye (kerato-conjunctivitis Vision usually preserved, Bilateral red, itchy eyes with Imbalance in any tear sicca) pupils reactive to light; foreign body sensation; mild component (production, hyperemia, no corneal pain; intermittent excessive distribution, evaporation, involvement watering absorption); medications (anticholinergics, antihistamines, oral contraceptive pills); Sjögren syndrome

Condition Signs Symptoms Causes Other causes Blepharitis Dandruff-like scaling on Red, irritated eye that is worse Chronic inflammation of eyelids eyelashes, missing or upon waking; itchy, crusted (base of eyelashes or misdirected eyelashes, swollen eyelids meibomian glands) by eyelids, secondary changes in staphylococcal infection conjunctiva and cornea leading to conjunctivitis

Condition Signs Symptoms Causes Other causes Corneal abrasion and foreign Reactive miosis, corneal edema Unilateral or bilateral severe eye Direct injury from an object body or haze, possible foreign body, pain; red, watery eyes; (e.g., finger, paper, stick, normal anterior chamber, visual photophobia; foreign body makeup applicator); metallic acuity depends on the position sensation; blepharospasm foreign body; contact lenses of the abrasion in relation to visual axis

Condition Signs Symptoms Causes Other causes Subconjunctival Normal vision; pupils equal Mild to no pain, no vision Spontaneous causes: hemorrhage and reactive to light; well disturbances, no discharge hypertension, severe demarcated, bright red patch coughing, straining, on white sclera; no corneal atherosclerotic vessels, involvement bleeding disorders Traumatic causes: blunt eye trauma, foreign body, penetrating injury

Condition Signs Symptoms Causes Other causes Keratitis (corneal Diminished vision, corneal Painful red eye, diminished Bacterial (Staphylococcus inflammation) opacities/white spot, vision, photophobia, species, Streptococcus); viral fluorescein staining under mucopurulent discharge, (HSV, VZV, Epstein-Barr virus, Wood lamp shows corneal foreign body sensation cytomegalovirus); abrasion ulcers, eyelid edema, from foreign body; contact hypopyon lenses

Condition Signs Symptoms Causes Other causes Iritis Diminished vision; poorly Constant eye pain (radiating Exogenous infection from reacting, constricted pupils; into brow/temple) developing perforating wound or corneal ciliary/perilimbal injection over hours, watering red eye, ulcer, autoimmune conditions blurred vision, photophobia

Condition Signs Symptoms Causes Other causes Glaucoma (acute angle- Marked reduction in visual Acute onset of severe, Obstruction to outflow of closure) acuity, dilated pupils react throbbing pain; watering red aqueous humor leading to poorly to light, diffuse eye; halos appear when increased intraocular redness, eyeball is tender patient is around lights pressure and firm to palpation
