WE ARE STARTING A NEW YEAR IN BEEKEEPING AND AS ALWAYS IT IS THE TIME OF YEAR TO PAY OUR DUES. BERNIE HAS ASK THAT WE MAIL OUR DUES IN TO AVOID STANDING IN LINE AT THE MEETING. DUES ARE $20.00 AND MAIL THEM TO BERNIE McGRAW, 1220 HAVENWOOD DR. MARYVILLE, TN. 37804. HE WILL BE TAKING PAYMENT AT THE MEETING ALSO. TO AVOID INTERUPTION OF THE NEWSLETTER PLEASE PAY BEFORE APRIL 1 ST. CHUCK S CORNER The New Year is here, and I hope you all are thinking about what we need to be doing now in preparation for the upcoming year. For all the 1 st and 2 nd year beekeepers, please don't get discouraged. It takes a few seasons to begin to understand a little better how to handle your bees. Many seasoned beekeepers, if honest, will admit that they killed a lot of bees their first few years of beekeeping. Don't let the Winter discourage you, just prepare for the coming year and look forward to what 2018 will bring. Welcome to farming bee farming! We are planning for a great 2018 schedule for our monthly BCBA meetings and I hope to see all of you there! Charlie Parton will be our speaker at our January meeting and I am looking forward to listening and gleaning more information from the experience that Charlie has seen. Also at our January meeting, we will explain the New Beekeeper Grant and the requirements for a potential grant recipient. This year BCBA will be awarding 5 New Beekeeper Grants which includes an entire starter beehive kit along with a 3-pound package of bees. If you know of new beekeepers or those thinking about beekeeping, please invite them to our January meeting. In addition to our information packed monthly meetings, the BCBA Beekeeping Short Course will be February 17 th here at Maryville Church of Christ. This is really a must for new beekeepers and still informative for those beekeepers who have had bees for a while. Even though there is no cost for the Short Course, there will be a wealth of information presented. Kelley Beekeeping, Dadant and Smokey Ridge Apiaries will be there at the Short Course offering a wide variety of beekeeping supplies. You can call and place an order from Kelley and Dadant and they will bring your order to the Short Course and can avoid any shipping costs just make sure you tell them you will be attending the Blount County Short Course. See you at the January meeting! ~Chuck JAN 2018 PG-2
