Part A Prescription Drug Coverage Part A generally pays for all drugs during a covered inpatient stay In hospital or skilled nursing facility (SNF) Drugs received as part of treatment Hospice Drugs for symptom control and pain relief only 6 Part B Prescription Drug Coverage Part B covers limited outpatient drugs Injectable and infusible drugs that are Not usually self administered, and Administered as part of a physician service Hepatitis B vaccine (for patients at high or intermediate risk) Influenza virus vaccine Pneumococcal pneumonia vaccine Vaccines directly related to the treatment of an injury or direct exposure to a disease or condition For example: Tetanus, Rabies 6 3

Part D Prescription Drug Coverage Medicare Part D plans covers all commercially available vaccines as long as the vaccine is reasonable and necessary to prevent illness. Medicare Part D plans generally cover vaccines that Part B does not cover. Example of Part B Vaccine Covered Under Part D: Medicare Part B covers the hepatitis B vaccine for patients at intermediate or high risk. However, a patient who does not satisfy Part B coverage criteria could still obtain the vaccine, with potential payment coming from a Part D plan. Flu Shot (Influenza) Influenza, also known as the flu Medicare generally covers the flu shot once every flu season All people with Medicare are eligible No copayment or deductible for the vaccine with Original Medicare if the provider accepts assignment 9 Hepatitis B Shots (Vaccine) Hepatitis is a serious disease (virus attacks the liver) Can cause lifelong infection resulting in cirrhosis (scarring) of the liver, liver cancer, liver failure, and death Covered for people at medium to high risk, including but not limited to End Stage Renal Disease, hemophilia, and diabetes mellitus Conditions that lower resistance to infection Certain health care professionals No copayment or deductible if your provider accepts assignment 10 5

Hepatitis C Screening Test Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is a serious disease (virus attacks the liver) Can cause chronic liver disease, cirrhosis (scarring of the liver), liver cancer, liver failure, and even death Covered when ordered by primary care practitioner in a primary care setting Single, once in a lifetime HCV screening test if born from 1945 to 1965 Annually, if high risk person with continued illicit drug use since prior negative HCV screening test No copayment or deductible if your provider accepts assignment 11 Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) Screening Except for individuals who are pregnant, Medicare covers one annual voluntary HIV screening for people Between the ages of 15 and 65, without regard to perceived risk Younger than 15 and older than 65, who are at increased risk. For people with Medicare who are pregnant, up to 3 voluntary screenings during a pregnancy are covered No cost for the test if provider accepts assignment Pay 20% of Medicare approved amount for visit 12 6

Pneumococcal Vaccine Medicare covers An initial pneumococcal vaccine for all people with Medicare who ve never received the vaccine under Medicare Part B A different second pneumococcal vaccine one year after the first vaccine was administered (11 full months have passed following the month in which the last pneumococcal vaccine was administered) All people with Medicare are eligible No copayment or deductible for the vaccines with Original Medicare if the provider accepts assignment 13 Shingles Vaccine Medicare Part D coverage of Shingles Vaccine: In Network Administration by Pharmacy: Patients get a prescription from their physician and bring it to their local network retail pharmacy (or the physician transmits it electronically). In some cases, a pharmacist administers the vaccine (unless prohibited by State law). The pharmacy bills the Part D plan, and patients pay the pharmacy the required Part D cost sharing amount. 14 7

Shingles Vaccine Medicare Part D coverage of Shingles Vaccine: In Network Pharmacy Distribution to Physician: Patients get a prescription from their physician and bring it to the pharmacy (or the physician transmits it electronically). The pharmacy then fills the prescription, ships or delivers it to the physician s office, and bills the Part D plan for dispensing and providing the vaccine. The pharmacy bills the Part D plan, and patients pay the pharmacy the required Part D cost sharing amount and pay the physician for administering the vaccine. 15 Your Guide to Medicare s Preventive Services CMS Product No. 10110 16 8

When You Can Join or Switch Plans Medicare s Open Enrollment Period ( Open Enrollment ) October 15 December 7 each year Changes go into effect on January 1 January 1 February 14 If you re in a Medicare Advantage Plan, you can leave your plan and switch to Original Medicare. If you switch, you have until February 14 to also join a Medicare drug plan to add drug coverage.
