Welcome from Executive Joanne Carter

TB-HIV Champion Thokozile Phiri-Nkhoma Since 2009, Thokozile has translated her personal experiences into a passion for fighting tuberculosis (TB) on both the local and global level. She currently works for the Tikondane Women Congress for Health, an organization comprised of HIV support groups that receive and conduct community education sessions on TB aimed at people living with HIV. In addition to providing education, they have also established a mobile clinic, developed a TB-HIV integration community education manual, and mobilized 400 women living with HIV to join support groups where they are screened for TB. In 2010, she was selected as a member of the National TB-HIV technical subgroup in Malawi and in the same year, selected as one of only two community representatives for the Stop TB Partnerships Working Group on New Diagnostics, at the WHO headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland. We are also welcoming her to the U.S. for our Global Fund media tour later this month!

Global Campaigns Global Fund Replenishment Save an additional 9 million lives through programs supported by the Global Fund, leading to over 30 million lives saved cumulatively by 2020 Prevent 300 million new infections across the three diseases Leverage $41 billion in contributions from affected countries from their own domestic budgets Global Fund Senate sign-on letter: 36 signatures!

Global Campaigns: Take Action Global Fund Replenishment Write a letter to the editor http://tinyurl.com/writegf Pitch the idea of an editorial to your local paper http://tinyurl.com/editorialgf Ask your House member to write the Administration in support of the Global Fund http://tinyurl.com/talktohouse

Next Steps on Reach Act So far, we have 176 cosponsors (including leads) on H.R.3706 and 26 cosponsors (over a quarter of the Senate, including leads) on S.1911, the Reach Act. Can we get to 200 in the House? You have done spectacular work! So, the next moves: Take advantage of town halls and the opportunity to book in-district recess meetings. (Let us know if you ve set something up on this handy form! http://tinyurl.com/summertownhall Ask for Reach Act cosponsorship commitments. Already on the Reach Act? Ask legislators to speak to committee leadership about moving the bill and write a letter to the editor! Don t forget to log your meeting on the Lobby Report form: www.tinyurl.com/reslrf

Pitching the Idea of a Global Fund Replenishment Editorial to Your Local Paper Engage the listener: On September 16, world leaders will meet in Montreal for the replenishment conference of The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. The goal is to raise $13 billion to defeat these three pandemics. No other single event will play a bigger role in changing the trajectory of tuberculosis than this replenishment. State the Problem: The Global Fund provides about eighty percent of all external funding for fighting TB. Since 2000, TB deaths have declined 29 percent in countries partnering with the Global Fund. But if we don t act, we risk squandering all the progress made over the past 15 years. Illustrate the solution: When the world gathers in September, the U.S. can do its part by pledging to contribute a full one-third of the Global Fund s resources, as it has done in the past. This is a chance for President Obama to secure his legacy on global health and show the world that the U.S. is committed to stopping TB, HIV, and malaria in their tracks. Call to action: Would you be willing to write an editorial on this historic funding conference for our local readers? I have a comprehensive editorial packet that I can forward you and would happily answer any questions.
