Alcohol Notes What is Alcohol? A depressant drug-slows the working of the brain and the nervous system Alcohol enters the body through the bloodstream The younger you are when you start drinking, the more likely you are to have a problem with alcohol. What is one drink of Alcohol? A 12 ounce beer = 6 ounce glass of wine = 1 ½ shots of 80 proof liquor = = How does alcohol affect your body? The body takes about ½ hour to feel the effects of alcohol. It takes approximately 1 hour for each drink to be used by the body. Alcohol poisoning occurs when you drink too much alcohol too fast, which can lead to coma or even death. How alcohol affects you depends on: How much alcohol is consumed The time period in which it is consumed How fast you drink How much food is in the stomach o Food slows the alcohol passing into the blood stream A persons body weight Your Gender, male or female Your mood

Health Risks of Alcohol Consumption SHORT TERM Damage the part of your brain that controls o Coordination-lose coordination o Memory o Judgment o Decision making-do risky reckless, unsafe things o Speech-slur your words o Reaction-becomes much slower LONG TERM Brain Damage o Brain is still developing before the age of 21 Stomach, Liver, Kidney Damage Destroys body and looks The Bottom Line More teens are killed by alcohol than by all illegal drugs combined The younger you are when you start drinking, the more likely you are to have a problem with alcohol You ALWAYS have a choice about whether or not to drink

Billboards show young, good looking people holding colorful drinks, and the Super Bowl devotes almost as much time to beer ads as it does to football. The people who make and sell alcohol spend big money trying to convince us that it s the center of fun, exciting life and millions of young people see those messages every day. 1. Why do people drink alcohol? 2. Why do teenagers decide to drink alcohol when they know it s terrible, illegal and brain damaging? 3. In what way does it affect the brain and other parts of the body? 4. If someone offered you an alcoholic drink, what would you say? Why?

Marijuana Notes What is Marijuana? AKA: Blunt, dope, grass, joint, Mary Jane, pot, reefer, smoke, weed, hash, 420 An illegal drug made from the hemp plant called cannabis A green and brown mix of dried flowers, stems, seeds and leaves from the plant THC (tetrahydrocannabinol)- the addictive drug found in marijuana THC moves quickly through the bloodstream to the brain and other organs throughout the body The body stores THC in the body in fatty organs for 4-6 weeks Marijuana used today is up to 10 times stronger than it was years ago What Effects Does Marijuana Have on the Body? Increases heart rate and pulse rate-causes the heart to beat 50% faster than normal Affects the pleasure center of the brain-causes decreased motivation (laziness) Affects concentration-decreases short term memory Decreases reaction time and judgment Decreases coordination Has 50-70% more cancer causing chemicals than tobacco smoke Decreases growth during puberty (disrupts development) Weakened verbal and communication skills Affects immune system-users tend to get sick more often

Inhalants Notes What is an Inhalant? Dangerous fumes, vapors or chemicals that are concentrated in a bag, on a cloth, etc. and inhaled deeply through the nose and/or mouth. Examples of Inhalants Often common household products are misused. o Glue, nail polish remover, gasoline, aerosol sprays, lacquer, nitrous oxide (laughing gas), white out, spot remover What are harmful effects inhalants have on my body? Loss of self-control Nosebleeds Sneezing, coughing Nausea Intoxication Impaired judgment Confusion Decreased heart rate (solvents) Fatigue Decreased breathing rate (solvents) Lack of coordination Rapid pulse (nitrates) Loss of appetite Headaches Loss of bowel/bladder control Hepatitis, brain damage, suffocation, death (long term use) Ways to Know if someone is using/abusing Inhalants Unexplained coughing, sneezing, vomiting Unusual smell on breath and/or clothes Sores/rashes around the nose or mouth Unexplained nose bleeds Slurred speech
