Cam in the Classroom Mrs. Harris s 6 th Grade Class Copeland Middle School Lake Shore Drive, Rockaway, NJ Thursday, November 20, 2014 Good Morning Chapin! You have the red class with you this morning. This is their first time on the Critter Cam. They have lots of questions for you...are you ready? I'm so excited and so ready! Are you watching a camera at the moment? What is the worst accident that an eagle has ever had We have had a number of very bad eagle accidents, but lead poisoning is a pretty bad one that we see more than we like. Eagles will come in after eating carrion that has lead in it and the eagles accidentally eat it, The amount of lead that can make a bird sick is about the size of the head of a pencil! They are very dull, unable to move properly, and will often have yucky poop! do you have any grizzlies at the wild life center now Grizzlies are not native to Virginia, but we will care for Black Bears! Cam in the Classroom: Mrs. Harris s 6 th Grade Class Page 1
This past year we had five cubs and two yearlings. have you ever had a bird that was let go but the failed We have on occasion, but we readmitted it as a patient and will do our best to help it get back on track! What had happened to the black bears that they ended up their (Michael) Well let me show you! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xj06v_rc6ps&list=uusw0usprww81mxv5aahviga Although you have a lot of bald eagle patients, do you have any other species of eagle? (Linda) We sometimes will admit Golden Eagles! Cam in the Classroom: Mrs. Harris s 6 th Grade Class Page 2
Golden Eagle from allaboutbirds.org Has any of your staff ever gotten injured by a patient? (Nina) A number of have scars from scratches, but no serious injuries. Are most of your patients birds? (Luanna) We do admit a number of birds but our most common patients are Eastern Cottontails and Eastern Grey Squirrels. Cam in the Classroom: Mrs. Harris s 6 th Grade Class Page 3
Those are two previous patients. Many rabbits come in when they have accidentally been kidnapped! do you have any deer (Aleia) Not at the moment. We do care for deer fawn, but they are all released! Would you like to see that video too? Yes the video of the fawn Ok let me grab it! Do some of your patents have any kinds of diseases? (NAtasha) Sometimes we see scary stuff like avian pox or other contagious diseases. Those animals are placed in isolation so they don't get other patients sick. do you have any fish? if you do, can I have some information? (Mike) We don't really see fish come into the Center, so I don't have any information for you. Here is the video of the fawn round-up! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hsdnrytw49q&list=uusw0usprww81mxv5aahviga Cam in the Classroom: Mrs. Harris s 6 th Grade Class Page 4
Is it possible to train a baby bear to let it hold you? (Julia) We don't want to train any of our patients to like being held. If they are too comfortable with humans, then we can't release them. It can be dangerous for people and for the bear. But we will hold them when they are young to feed them and give them medicine. What other questions do you have? About how many patients do you get each week?(chris) Depends on the season. Sometimes we can have as many as 20+ patients come in a day in the spring and summer! During the fall and winter, it slows down. We see more hawks and owl patients at this time. Cam in the Classroom: Mrs. Harris s 6 th Grade Class Page 5
Briscoe the Great Horned Owl Whats the most unusual animal you've had as a patient? (Charlotte) Oh! That's a great question! I guess while I have been at the Center was a Purple Gallinule! Cam in the Classroom: Mrs. Harris s 6 th Grade Class Page 6
