Massage is the use of hands, of mechanical means, to manipulate the soft tissues of the body, particularly muscles. It can be used for relaxation, stimulation or rehabilitation of the whole body of part of it. It promotes suppleness of the muscles, improves circulation and reduces stress. What are the main benefits and effects? * Soothing: touch is known to be soothing and comforting and massage uses touch to soothe and relax the body. Since 75% of disease is thought to be caused by stress, massage, which reduces stress, may well improve health. * Stimulating: the systems of the body are activated by massage. It therefore encourages improved circulation, aids digestion, waste removal and neural communication, invigorates and relaxes muscles thus preventing spasm and stiffness, speeds up skin desquamation and promotes cell regeneration. * Instinctive: when we knock of hurt ourselves we often use our hands to rub the affected place. Massage is an extension of this natural and instinctive method of soothing aches and pains. * Comforting: touch is natural and comforting. People of all ages use touch to gain a sense of security and well-being and consequently massage has psychological as well as physical benefits. * Universal: most people, from children to adults, can benefit from massage treatments. * Safe: massage is a non-threatening, non-invasive and natural therapy. Where does it come from? Massage is not a technique derived from one culture but from many. People the world over have used touch as a form of communication, comfort and defense throughout history. 3

Animals also use touch in a similar way, for example grooming their young with there tongues or beaks, licking wounds after a fight and nuzzling or nudging each other to show affection. Information taken from the book "An Introductory Guide to Massage" by Louise Tucker, which is used for study materials. Case studies: 10 x Clients to be treated 4 times HOT STONE MASSAGE WORKSHOP 2010 (not ITEC) Stones have been used for centuries in the massage and healing of the body. Meridian therapy used in other eastern holistic therapies is also used in Stone Therapy. Stone therapy is a holistic approach in dealing with stress, by effectively helping the emotional, physical and spiritual. A balance means to return the body s energy to a health, disease free-state. DURATION 2 DAYS (09:00 15:00) POINTS TO NOTE Relaxing therapy to give and receive Stress Relief Deep relaxation, which can be compared to meditation Balances all levels - Emotional, physical & Spiritual Works on chakras & Energy points Detoxifies and cleanses body Alleviates headaches, backache etc BASIC KIT 250 ml Almond oil 2 x essential oils: Lavender, Eucalyptus Set of Stones 2 x Hand Towels (Guest) Training Manual Wok Ladle NB: THERAPIST TO BRING 1 x Single bed sheet 4 x Small Towels 3 x Medium Towels 2 x Bath Sheets 2 x Disposable head Caps You will be required to complete 3 x Practical Case Studies before certification is issued Reflexology - What is it? This holistic therapy treats the whole person, particularly weak or ill areas, by using the feet as 'maps' of the body. On the feet there are points or zones which correspond to organs and systems of the body. By pressing on one of these points, the corresponding organ in the body is affected. For example, pressing on the tip of the big toe will cause a response in the brain and, vice versa, if there is a problem with brain the reflexologist will recognize the symptoms 4

of this in the big toe. This relationship, between a point on the foot and another part of the body is known as a reflex. A trained reflexologist uses finger or thumb pressure on each of the zones to find problem areas. He or she then applies more pressure which helps the corresponding part of the body to heal. Some professionals use reflexology techniques during massage treatments. Case studies: 10 x Clients to be treated 4 times What is Aromatherapy? Aromatherapy is the systematic use of essential oils in holistic treatments to improve physical and emotional well-being. Essential oils, extracted from plants, posses distinctive therapeutic properties which can be used to improve health and prevent disease. Both their physiological and psychological effect combines to promote positive health. These natural plant oils are applied in a variety of ways including massage, baths and inhalations. They are readily absorbed into the skin and have gentle physiological effects. Aromatherapy is an especially effective treatment for stress-related problems and a variety of chronic conditions. The name dates from the 1920s but different cultures and civilizations, such as the Ancient Egyptians and the Roman Empire, have used plants and herbs for religious, medical and cosmetic purposes, as well as in rituals, embalming and preserving, for centuries. Information taken from the book by Louise Tucker "An Introductory Guide to Aromatherapy" which is used as part of the curriculum. Case studies: 10 x Clients to be treated 4 times What is all about? To provide treatments for the purposes of relaxation, stress relief, slimming & weight loss. Is the use of body electrical machines (galvanic, faradic, vacuum suction, G-5 & micro current) to help correct body imperfections. Figure diagnosis helps to analyse the body s structures. Case studies: 3 x Clients to be treated 3 times Unit 13 Facial Electrical Treatments Case Study requirements: 5 Clients to be treated (using a minimum of 2 suitable facial electrical treatments per client). Candidates should cover the full range of equipment throughout their case study treatments with all evidence to be documented.
