Oral health is an essential component of the overall health status for pregnant women and women who are planning to become pregnant. During pregnancy, women s bodies undergo complex physiological changes that can adversely affect their oral health. Current research suggests that some prenatal oral conditions may have adverse consequences for the mother and young child. The presentation will provide recommendations about preventive and restorative care for expectant mothers as well as information on how to promote healthy behaviors that can improve the oral health of mothers, infants, and young children. Speaker: Dr. Rick McDaniel Dr. McDaniel received his DMD from the MUSC School of Dental Medicine and his Master s in Public Health from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He maintains a successful family dental practice in Batesburg-Leesville and also serves as the Dental Consultant to the SCDHEC Division of Oral Health. Dr. McDaniel has been a member of the ADA/SCDA (Central District-Greater Columbia Dental Association) since 1977 and has served as a house delegate. He is also a member of the American Public Health Association. Dr. McDaniel is a past board member of the Carolina Honduras Health Foundation, a non-profit organization that provides free medical and dental care to rural populations in Honduras. 3

It will classify periodontal disease and identify its causes, treatment options, procedures, and techniques as well as continued care and antimicrobials. Dental implant therapy and maintenance also will be covered in detail. Speaker: Dr. Eric Hamrick As a periodontist, Dr. Eric Hamrick enjoys providing his patients with the highest level of care and expertise. He received his Bachelor of Science degree from Florida Southern University, his Doctor of Dental Medicine from the Medical University of South Carolina, and Certificate in Periodontics from the University of Alabama. A past president of the South Carolina Society of Periodontics and the Greenville Dental Society, Dr. Hamrick recently was appointed to the academic faculty of the Medical University of South Carolina. He has extensive experience in periodontal therapy, cosmetic periodontal surgery, pre-prosthetic surgery, and dental implant therapy. This course will address trends in caries epidemiology, describe new diagnostic technologies, and discuss minimally invasive approaches to managing this disease. With earlier detection, the clinician will be able to redirect management from a restorative (surgical) approach to a medical (preventive) approach. Speaker: Renee C. Graham, RDH, Med. Ms. Graham received a dental hygiene degree from Darton College and a Bachelor of Science in Education and a Master of Education degree from Valdosta State University. She brings 19 years of clinical experience in general and periodontal practice and has 11 years of academic experience. For the past 10 years, she has held the position of Director of Dental Programs at Valdosta Technical College in Valdosta, GA. Ms. Graham has served as a site visitor for the Commission on Dental Accreditation since 2003 and has been very active with regional testing agencies, the Georgia Dental Hygiene Educators Association, and dental hygiene and assisting curriculum development for the State of Georgia.
