8 little helpers love great achievements Dispersing agents Solid particles such as pigments and fillers are important components of paints, coatings and inks and need to be dispersed and stabilized well in the formulations to assure consistent color, quality and durability. Highly specialized additives are needed to wet, disperse and stabilize dry pigment powders in liquid formulations. Dispersing agents represent an essential component of most paint and coating formulations. Their specialized function ensures color strength, gloss, viscosity stability and prevents sedimentation of particles. Today, high quality coatings of high brilliance and color strength are characterized by a perfect pigment dispersion, optimal pigment particle size and long-term stabilization of the dispersed particles in the formulation. BASF s knowledge of pigment chemistry and surface treatments combined with our know-how about dispersing agents and their technology enables us to find optimum solutions for our customers and their formulation challenges. Key benefits for your formulation Shorter dispersion time Enhanced gloss Increased color-strength and hiding power Reduced viscosities Improved tone development Prevention of flooding and floating Avoidance of flocculation Prevention of settling of pigments and fillers Favored properties primary particles aggregates agglomerates Favored energy state Optimum properties at low particle size Energy required to mill down pigment Stabilization required to keep particles apart Need for dispersion, whereby optimum properties of a pigment are achieved at low particle size. Dispersing agents

little helpers love great achievements 9 BASF Formulation Additives offer a full range of dispersing agents for all coating and ink formulations containing highly efficient solutions for aqueous, solvent-based, high-solid or 100% solids and for pigment concentrates. The broad technology portfolio includes polymeric, oligomeric and surfactant-based dispersing agents. Product range for water-based Dispex Ultra FA Chemistry Low-molecular weight dispersants As illustrated, dispersing agents designed with CFRP consist of two defined blocks that are produced by sequential polymerization of monomers or monomer mixtures. Typically, a longer stabilizer block is synthesized first, which has to be compatible with the relevant paint. The anchoring block contains functional groups which interact strongly with the pigment surface to allow for efficient and stable adsorption. For demanding applications like organic pigments, the anchoring block typically contains aminic groups, which can optionally be modified further. Dispex Ultra FA Dispex AA Dispex CX Dispex Ultra PA Dispex Ultra PX Oligomeric dispersants (FAME) High-molecular weight dispersants Advanced high-molecular weight dispersants A-Block is resin & solvent specific Compatible with paint system, e.g. resins and solvents B-Block is pigment specific Anchoring onto pigment Structure of dispersing agents designed with CFRP technology. Product range for solvent-based (incl. 100% ) Efka FA Dispex Ultra FA Efka FA Efka PA Efka PU Efka PX Chemistry Low-molecular weight dispersants Oligomeric dispersants (FAME) High-molecular weight dispersants Advanced high-molecular weight dispersants Especially, the award-winning controlled free radical polymerization (CFRP) allows for higher efficiency and broader compatibility which creates optimal rheology and improved coloristics. Benefits are outstanding viscosity reduction, enhanced gloss, increased color intensity and hiding power. Efka PX- and Dispex Ultra PX grades are very versatile and powerful product groups for solventbased/-free and aqueous applications, respectively. Although non-controlled free-radical polymerization leads to good dispersing agents, polymers with a highly defined architecture can be more efficient, resulting in improved colorant stability and broader system compatibilities. This exact degree of control in polymer synthesis is created by the award winning Controlled Free Radical Polymerization (CFRP) technology. It enables the precise design of polymer structures. With the CFRP technology, well-defined block copolymers can be prepared that are designed to optimally fit pigment and resin chemistry. BASF recently developed a new dispersant toolbox that was developed to formulate a complete set of label-free universal colorants. In architectural paints, universal pigment concentrates can be used to tint aqueous and solvent-based paints. This is achieved with "universal" dispersing additives which are often based on low molecular weight or oligomeric type dispersing agents. All toolbox products comply with the major ecolabel standards. Based on innovative new chemistry, a combination of amine- and acid-functional polymers was found that provides universal affinity to pigments surfaces. With this set of dispersants it is possible to formulate inorganic pigments at high pigment loading while also achieving excellent results with organic pigments and carbon blacks. The products carry no or a mild labelling, which allows the formulator their use in label-free colourant formulations at a maximum concentration of 10%, provided no other components with similar labelling are used. For all dispersing additives BASF experts have worked out guide formulas for a variety of pigments in order to support formulators and developers. They are widely used in the coating industry as flow and leveling agents. Pure polyacrylate copolymers are highly appreciated for their flow performance, although they do not significantly reduce the surface tension of a formulation. A straight polyacrylate cannot solve problems like cratering, poor substrate wetting and other problems related to surface tension. Fluorinated polyacrylates have been developed as a result. These polyacrylates with fluorinated side chains can lower the surface tension of a formulation. They combine excellent flow and leveling with anticratering and good wetting behavior. In comparison to organomodified silicones and straight polyacrylates, fluorocarbon-modified polyacrylates have clear advantages with respect to flow, substrate wetting and fish-eye resistance. On the other hand, polysiloxanes can provide strong surface slip and anti-blocking effects and reduce surface tension. The newest generation of fluorinated acrylates are block copolymers with fluorinated side chains. These unique products are made via controlled free radical polymerization (CFRP), which allows the synthesis of block copolymer structures and to concentrate the fluorinated side chains in one polymer block only. Such an arrangement makes best use of the fluorinated side chains and guarantees maximum effectiveness with respect to substrate wetting and anti-cratering behaviour. 38 little helpers love great achievements 3 Defoamers Defoamers

little helpers love great achievements 39 Defoamers suppress and destroy foam and its negative effects prior to and during application of a coating. By removing or inhibiting air bubbles they are important process aids throughout the paint production as well as the application process. Paint manufacturers benefit from foam-free production processes by reaching their desired results much quicker and do not have to worry about additional negative side effects, for example inaccurate filling of containers due to entrapped air. At a glance Broad selection of defoamer technologies including products based on mineral oils or native oils as well as specialty-emulsion defoamers, organosilicone-based and silicone-free products and star-polymer defoamers FoamStar polymer technology defoams on a molecular level. It yields faster bubblebreak times and improves the overall efficiency. 1 2 3 Focus on establishing a perfect balance between excellent foam suppression, high compatibility, long-term efficiency, easy handling and environmental compliance in form of VOC-free, low S-VOC and low odor solutions Our customers increasingly need highly efficient defoamers with regulatory compliance to formulate high-quality paints, coatings and inks. Defoamers Peter Bene Technical Marketing, BASF Formulation Additives

40 little helpers love great achievements Defoamers For paint manufacturers and applicators foam control is one of the major tasks to ensure a smooth and even appearance of the paint film. Thus, high performing defoamers are needed to prevent the formation of bubbles in liquid paints. They reduce foam and avoid foam-formation during the production, application and transport of paint formulations. Especially in industrial surroundings, foam is a very undesirable phenomenon that can emerge during dispersing processes, pumping, stirring operations or while applying paints. This foam can for example increase the production time, create difficulties in filling vessels, reduce the efficiency of many high speed operations and promote surface defects like craters, fish eyes, pinholes and weak points in the dried film. In order to explain the working mechanism of defoamers, there is no single overarching defoamer theory in the scientific literature. However, for aqueous all theories have some explanations and prerequisites in common. It is generally accepted that a defoamer active should: Possess a controlled incompatibility with the formulation to be defoamed. This controlled incompatibility must remain even after long term storage. Have a low surface tension. Exhibit a de-wetting effect. Have the capability to penetrate into the foam lamellae and to spread effectively on the liquid/ gas interface. Defoamers

little helpers love great achievements 41 Product range Chemistry Characteristics Foamaster MO mineral oil macro foam, universal Foamaster NO natural oil renewable, low S-VOC Foamaster WO white oil food contact, better odor, low fogging FoamStar ED emulsion defoamers universal, easy to incorporate FoamStar PB polymer based high efficiency, no silicone FoamStar SI silicone based defoamers high gloss, industrial, printing inks FoamStar ST star polymer based defoamers high efficiency, fast foam knock down Efka PB polymer based defoamers high efficiency, no silicone Efka SI silicone based defoamers high efficiency, high gloss All defoamers are characterized by a certain balance between compatibility and incompatibility in a given system. On one hand, the active ingredient in the defoamer must be almost insoluble in the paint formulation. A defoamer must form small defoamer droplets which are able to migrate into the foam lamellae. In order to ensure long term defoaming efficiency the defoamer droplets have to be stable in the system and should not dissolve upon storage. Unlike conventional mineral oil and silicone defoamers, the FoamStar molecule defoams on a molecular level. It acts as a unique surfactant interacting with the foam-stabilizing surfactants and destabilizes the foam bubbles. When combined with conventional defoamer types it yields faster bubble-break times and improves the overall efficiency. Bubble-break time is the time in seconds needed to break all macro bubbles in a paint film; the shorter the time the better the defoamer. On the other hand, no surface defects such as craters should be generated in the final paint film due to defoamer incompatibility. The defoamer must therefore be sufficiently compatible with the binder. Thus, every defoamer is formulated on a tightrope between compatibility and targeted incompatibility BASF offers a broad selection of defoamer technologies to the paint and coatings market. The portfolio ranges from standard mineral oil defoamer technologies to aqueous emulsion defoamers and up to our innovative FoamStar technology. Today, most defoamers are sophisticated formulations designed to fit in together with paint and coating formulations in the best possible way. Usually the formulations are based on raw materials with low surface tension such as silicone, mineral oils, fatty acids and fluorocarbons. A very special defoaming technology is our awardwinning FoamStar series. The FoamStar polymer is a hyper-branched polymer with a 3D star-shaped structure, containing hydrophilic as well as hydrophobic elements. 52 little helpers love great achievements 4 Rheology modifiers Rheology modifiers

little helpers love great achievements 53 Rheology modifiers enable formulators to adjust the flow behavior of paints. That way, painters benefit from improved viscosity and application characteristics. For example, rheology modifiers from BASF reduce dripping and spattering of paint during roller or brush application. Sag resistance of a paint is improved by a rapid but controlled viscosity increase after application. During transport and storage of the paint, the rheology modifiers prevent sedimentation of the pigments within your formulation. At a glance Broad portfolio of synthetic rheology modifiers, including non-ionic associative (HEUR/HMPE), anionic associative (HASE) and non-associative thickener (ASE) technologies 1 2 Focus on water-based with highly efficient products that provide additional functionality like wetting properties and health or environmental aspects (free of VOC, odor, APEO and heavy metals) BASF offers a strong portfolio of rheology modifiers for decorative and industrial coatings providing improved wash and scrub resistance, excellent leveling and reduced spattering. 54 little helpers love great achievements Rheology modifiers Rheological additives are key ingredients in paints, coatings and inks as they help control the coating application and the final appearance. Without these special additives, paints would be as runny as water. During application, paints would spatter in all directions, have little hiding power and exhibit a much shorter shelf life. Rheology modifiers enable formulators to adjust the flow behavior of paints and coatings. That way, painters benefit from improved viscosity and application characteristics. Rheology modifiers from BASF reduce dripping and spattering of paint during roller or brush application. Sag resistance is improved by a rapid but controlled viscosity increase after application. During transport and storage of the paint, rheology modifiers prevent sedimentation of the pigments within a formulation. Rheology modifiers ensure that the end product achieves the desired balance between consistency, durability and good application properties. BASF offers six classes of rheological additives for paints and coatings: Alkali swellable emulsions (ASE) Hydrophobically modified alkali swellabe emulsions (HASE) Hydrophobically modified polyurethanes (HEUR) Hydrophobically modified polyethers (HMPE) Attapulgites (inorganic rheology modifiers) Castor oil and wax based thixotropes The naming of our products corresponds to their chemical composition and shear profile: Product range Rheovis HS 1xxx Rheovis AS 1xxx Chemistry Associative acrylic (HASE) Non-associative acrylic (ASE) Rheovis PE 1xxx Associative polyether (HMPE) viscosity [mpas] 10 5 10 4 10 3 storage sag. leveling Rheovis PU 1xxx Attagel Associative polyurethane (HEUR) Organo clay types 10 2 10 stirring painting Efka RM 1xxx Rheology modifiers for solvent based Rheology modifiers 1 0.01 0.1 1 10 10 2 10 3 10 4 shear rate [s-1] Brookfield Controlled Stress Rheometer Stormer ICI 11xx = low shear 12xx = mid shear 13xx = high shear 19xx = solids

Each product class has its own characteristic properties. The table above highlights the benefits and areas of use of each product class. Especially our Rheovis PU and PE series of associative thickeners represent a class of groundbreaking materials based primarily on hydrophobically modified polyether and polyurethane derivatives. With these rheology modifiers, it is possible to create a wide variety of rheological profiles, imparting superb attributes to a broad range of water-based paints and coatings. The rheological behavior of aqueous paints and coatings can be rendered either more Newtonian (brush, roll-on, curtain coating) or more pseudoplastic (sprayable) in nature to ensure optimized application properties. Key benefits for your formulation: Broad rheology profile Highly efficient across many resin types ph independent Improved wash and scrub resistance Low impact on water uptake Low impact on water whitening Excellent leveling Reduced spattering You can find further information about our rheology modifiers on our website www.basf.com/formulation-additives Rheology modifiers
