About the WDSC Down s syndrome is the largest single cause of learning disability. Approximately one in every 1,000 babies worldwide is born with Down s syndrome. It occurs randomly at the point of conception and affects males and females alike. It is rarely hereditary and nothing the parents did before or during pregnancy can have caused it. It is a lifelong condition and there is no cure; however, there are many ways to ensure that each individual with Down s syndrome is given the right type and amount of support that they need to meet their full potential. The Congress will provide a once in a lifetime opportunity for many families in Scotland to access information on the leading edge of medical research, developments in education and best practice in social welfare and policy from all the corners of the globe. The Congress will also offer a unique environment to share experiences and learning with families from all over the world. The event will enable our families to feel part of a global community and connect with people from diverse cultures, backgrounds and communities who face similar joys, challenges and concerns of their own. There will be performances by talented people with Down s syndrome, and a fantastic feel good atmosphere as people come together to celebrate. About Down s Syndrome Scotland Down s Syndrome Scotland (DSS) was established in 1982. We are the only charity in Scotland dedicated solely to supporting people with Down s syndrome and their carers. We provide all through life support nationally across Scotland and have the following services. Family Support Service Our Family Support Service Officers, based across Scotland, are here to support families and people with Down s syndrome through every age and stage of life. They can offer support on all aspects surrounding Down s syndrome, including to professionals working with children and adults with Down s syndrome. Information Resources We have a vast array of information to help families and professionals alike, from our new baby packs to our library resources and our website. Achieving Better Communications Around Scotland during term time, our weekly ABC groups provide activities for children to develop better speech, language and communication skills; information and support to parents encourages continuation at home and school. The approach and activities draw upon research findings on the specific learning profile of children with Down s syndrome. Policy Work As an organisation, we are strengthening the voice of people with Down s syndrome and their families by informing and working with the Scottish Government, the Scottish NHS and other relevant organisations of their concerns and interests. Branches We have branches throughout the country in local communities who provide a range of social activities. To find a branch near you visit www.dsscotland.org.uk Our Programme The Congress programme will consist of the main strands detailed below. We will ensure that people with Down s syndrome are supported to be involved in all aspects of the delivery of the Congress. Paramount in our aims is to ensure that delegates get the most out of the event and Down s Syndrome Scotland will ensure that we adhere to the WDSC principle of Specificity, so that delegates take away information that will enable them to contribute to the most effective application of knowledge for the health, education and social participation of people with Down s syndrome in their home nation.
Research Our aim is to present the most significant scientific advances in all the major disciplines connected with Down s syndrome. These may include and are not limited to health, education, employment, adequate standards of living and social protection, legal recognition, participation in public and political life, independent living, being included in the community and cultural, recreational, leisure and sporting participation. Practice In this strand we will offer delegates the opportunity to select from a programme of presentations and workshops lead by individuals and groups who are involved in working with people with Down s syndrome. The workshops will explore the methodology and techniques used and focus on the positive differences that their work delivers for people with Down s syndrome. We are particularly keen to share examples of practice that helps to ensure inclusion for people with Down s syndrome into society. Lived Experience This covers the lived experiences of people with Down s syndrome and their families. This programme will focus on the presentation of best practice and innovation. Particular attention will be paid to highlighting work or activities that contribute to or result in the full inclusion of people with Down s syndrome in all aspects of society. Performance We have had so many requests from performers that we have decided to have a performance strand. Performances may happen at a range of times during the Congress e.g. during the programme, in the same space that we hold the plenaries (large auditorium) or during lunch or evening breaks. All in all, the 3 day Congress will deliver a full and diverse programme for families and professionals alike. From the scientific to the social, from the factual to the full on fun, it is our aim that as many of our Down s Syndrome Scotland members, and new families who will contact us in the period from now until July 2018, will be able to attend for as many days as possible and benefit from learning, experiences and making contacts that will benefit and enrich their lives for years into the future. The Congress is, after all, the single biggest project Down s Syndrome Scotland has ever undertaken in pursuit of our aim of helping people with Down s syndrome realise their potential. We are committed to ensuring that WDSC 2018 is as accessible as possible for the 1000+ individuals who have made contact with our organisation in recent years. The WDSC will offer a unique environment to share experiences and learning with families from all over the world.
