Issue # 6 K-W SENIORS DAY PROGRAM NEWSLETTER Welcome Spring! April 2018 Spring is upon us! The days are getting longer as we welcome warmer temperatures and sunny days ahead! Soon the chill of winter will be behind us as summer approaches and sets our fans and air-conditioners humming to find relief from the heat! Issue # 7 Index: In Memory 3 So let s shake off our winter blahs and enjoy the world around us as it awakens from its winter slumber. It is a time to stop and smell the daffodils and tulips as they stretch up to greet the sunshine and gently sway in the spring breeze. This is a time to embrace the new growth of the spring season as we watch the trees take bud and hear the song of birds as they happily build their nests. Such a beautiful time of year to share with all of our friends at the K-W Seniors Day Program! We look forward to spending time together and sharing some fun days ahead. Look inside for some special events coming up in the months ahead! K-W SENIORS DAY PROGRAM WELCOMING OUR NEW FRIENDS! We are very happy to welcome some new faces who have joined our program these last few months! Some of you may be new clients who have joined the program to participate in the fun. Some of you may be new volunteers or students who have come to help and bring a smile to someone s face! We are delighted to know you and hope that you enjoy your time with us making new friends and having some laughs together! There are always different activities to choose from; so try something that you have never done before! It is a chance to meet new people and have fun learning something new! Bidding Farewell to old Friends We are sad to say farewell to several friends whom we have come to know and love at our program. Some have moved away to be closer to loved ones and others have moved to a place where they are surrounded with more support and care. We miss our friends and wish them well in their new homes where we know they will build new friendships: but they will not be forgotten. If there is something that you would like to try or share with us, please let us know! Page 2

In Loving Memory Issue # 6 It is with a heavy heart that we share the passing of five of our friends since our last Newsletter. We are saddened by these losses and send our sincere and heartfelt condolences to family, loved one s and friends. While there is no way we can feel your pain, we do feel your loss as we came to know and love each of our friends while they were with us. We will fondly remember our friends who have passed and are happy to have had the chance to become your friends, sharing good times and laughter together. Especially, our friends: Anne Smith Melvin Schmidt Dorothy Locking Jim Burwell Emil Weyer Special thanks to families who have made memorial donations to our program in memory of loved ones you have lost. Hear Well Be Well, will be coming to the K-W Seniors Day Program with their Mobile Sound Booth where you can have a comprehensive hearing test, a video-audioscope of your ear canal and your hearing aids serviced by a professional team. They will be available to answer questions and will have their walker and wheelchair accessible unit on site to privately assist you with understanding your hearing health! Choose the day that works best for you and book your free appointment with Sarah at the program: Wednesday, April 18th, 2018 Thursday, April 19th, 2018 Page 4

Annual Lillian Rudrum Memorial Volunteer Award Every year in June one of our volunteers is honoured with a special award recognizing their time and dedication. It is time again to award another volunteer for his/her outstanding achievements! This award was created to honour one of our longest serving program volunteers who dedicated nearly 3 decades of her life to our program. Her name was Lillian Rudrum. In memory of Lil, an annual award was created to present to a volunteer who has shown volunteer excellence within our program and for our clients whom we serve. We need your help! The clients, volunteers and staff will have their chance to vote for the volunteer they feel should be presented with this award for 2018! We will be posting pictures and names of all of our amazing volunteers on our bulletin board in the program and providing a ballot box for you to nominate your favourite volunteer! Nominations will open on May 1, 2018. The volunteer with the most nominations, WINS! The winner will be announced at our Annual Appreciation Dinner for volunteers and Program Supporters in June. Previous winners of this honourable award are: 2013 May Wilson 2014 Mel Kitchen 2016 Wanda Duke 2017 Gary Toms 2015 Norma Wylie

ANNUAL FUNDRAISING AND MEMEBERSHIP CAMPAIGN APRIL 2018 Page 6 April launches our Annual Membership and Donation Campaign. As you know, we are a non-profit organization which leases space from Sunnyside Home. We are independently operated and governed by a volunteer Board of Directors. Our program is solely funded by the Waterloo Wellington Local Health Integration Network. Unfortunately, the funding we receive is not enough to support the rising costs of our operational expenses, such as our lease, transportation services, meal costs and program supplies. We will be mailing out letters asking you for your support. Any donations are greatly appreciated! Tax receipts are issued for all donations. Memberships are not required to participate the K-W Seniors Day Program. As a registered charity we are obligated under the Charitable Act, to have a membership body. This membership body has certain rights and responsibilities under the Not for Profit Act; namely, to vote on the election of Board of Directors and on fundamental corporate transactions, like amendments to the bylaws or mergers. Although your support would be greatly appreciated, you are under no obligation to have a membership or to make a donation. If you wish to be removed from our membership mailing list, please feel free to inform Sarah, Paula or Deanne and we will happily oblige your request.

National Volunteer Appreciation Week April 15-21, 2018. We are very fortunate to have some amazing people who support our program by giving their time, care and dedication. These people are VOLUNTEERS! If we did not have the help of our volunteers, we would not be able to provide the many activities and programs for everyone to enjoy. They are integral to our program and we are very grateful for their help! We will be formally acknowledging and thanking all or our volunteers for their time and dedication the week of April 15 21, 2018. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts! Page 7

Please mark your calendars on the following dates for our program closures: Easter Holiday: Friday, March 30, 2018 and Monday, April 2, 2018. Victoria Day Holiday Monday, May 21, 2018 Canada Day Holiday July 2, 2018 Page 8
