Female and Male Reproductive Systems

Reproductive System: Organs that make possible the production of offspring.

Female Reproductive System

Female Reproductive System: Words to be familiar with ESTROGEN Female hormone OVUM OVULATION FERTILIZATION IMPLANTATION MENSTRUATION Female sex cell that is released from the ovaries during ovulation. The release of one mature egg cell each month. Occurs when a male s sperm cell joins with a female s egg cell. When a fertilized egg attaches to the uterine wall at the start pregnancy. Uterine lining, the unfertilized egg, and some blood flow out of the body.

Functions of the Female Reproductive System: Produces estrogen. Produces, stores, and transports ova. Provides a place for fertilization to occur. Protects and nourishes the fertilized egg as it grows and matures into a human being.

Ovary: *Female glands that produce and store ovum and produce and secrete female hormones. Ovary

Fallopian Tubes: *Tubes that transport the egg from the ovary to the uterus. Fertilization occurs here. Fallopian Tube Ovary

Uterus: *Where the fetus is nourished prior to birth. Fallopian Tube Ovary Uterus

Uterine Lining: *The inner layer of the uterus. Implantation occurs here. If there is no implantation, the lining is shed through menstruation. Fallopian Tube Ovary Uterus Uterine Lining

Cervix: *The bottom of the uterus that opens into the vaginal canal. Allows the passage of menstrual fluid. Protects reproductive system and developing fetus from pathogens. Fallopian Tube Ovary Uterus Uterine Lining Cervix

Vagina: *The birth canal. It leads from the uterus to the outside of the body. Fallopian Tube Ovary Uterus Uterine Lining Vagina Cervix

How to take care of the Female Reproductive System: 1. Get regular checkups by a physician. 2. Bathe regularly. 3. During menstruation (period) change tampons and sanitary pads frequently. 4. Practice sexual abstinence before marriage

New Terms Sexual Abstinence: Not engaging in sexual activity until marriage. Sexual Activity: Any genital contact. (There are many definitions for this. This is how we will define it in our class.)

Any questions???

Matching Activity Match each term with its correct definition. When you think you have them all correct, compare with another group. After you have compared, raise your hands and I will check you off.

Male Reproduction system

Male Reproductive System: Words to be familiar with TESTOSTERONE Male hormone SPERM SEMEN Male sex cell that enters the egg during fertilization. Fluid that contains sperm and secretions from the male glands.

Functions of the Male Reproductive System: Produces testosterone Produces, stores, and transports sperm

Testes: *Produce sperm & testosterone Testes

Epididymis *Transports and stores sperm cells that are produced in the testes. Epididymis Testes

Vas Deferens: *Transports mature sperm to the urethra Vas Deferens Epididymis Testes

Seminal Vesicle: *Holds the liquid that mixes with sperm to form semen Vas Deferens Seminal Vesicle Epididymis Testes

Prostate Gland: *Secretes fluid that nourishes and protects sperm. Vas Deferens Seminal Vesicle Prostate Gland Epididymis Testes

Urethra: *Functions as an exit from the body. Releases sperm and urine. Vas Deferens Seminal Vesicle Prostate Gland Urethra Epididymis Testes

Penis: *Male reproductive organ Vas Deferens Seminal Vesicle Prostate Gland Urethra Penis Epididymis Testes

Scrotum: *Holds the testicles and keep the testicles at an optimal temperature. Vas Deferens Seminal Vesicle Prostate Gland Urethra Penis Epididymis Testes Scrotum

Bladder: *Stores urine Vas Deferens Seminal Vesicle Bladder Prostate Gland Urethra Penis Epididymis Testes Scrotum

How to take care of the Male Reproductive System: 1. Get regular checkups by a physician. 2. Bathe regularly 3. Wear a protective cup or supporter during athletic activities to prevent accidental injuries. 4. Practice sexual abstinence before marriage.
