General Information COURSE DESCRIPTION The Annual Update in Nephrology and Kidney Transplantation is a two-day course designed to update participants on a range of nephrology topics relevant to current medical practice. Topics include: chronic kidney disease hypertension glomerular disease dialysis kidney transplantation Through a combination of lectures, literature review, and case-based presentations, this course will deliver up-to-date and cutting edge information that can be directly integrated into clinical practice. In addition, an introductory workshop Beside Ultrasonography for the Nephrologist will be offered Saturday morning. This 4-hour hands-on workshop provides participants with techniques used to acquire ultrasound images of the kidneys, bladder and large vessels and guidance in recognizing common pathology detected by ultrasound. An additional fee of $150.00 is required to participate in this workshop, and space is limited to the first 12 participants. Sign up for this session on the registration website. The course provides ample opportunity for interaction with expert faculty. We continue to feature the popular audience response system to maximize speaker and attendee interactions. A comprehensive on-line syllabus will be available for future reference. Attendees are encouraged to bring laptops or ipads for viewing during the course. INTENDED AUDIENCE This course is intended for the all members of the nephrology community and will be of interest to nephrologists, nephrology trainees, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nurses, internists, primary care physicians and other specialists who participate in the care of patients with kidney disorders and kidney and/or pancreas transplants. COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES At the completion of this course, participants should be able to: Appraise recent publications related to dialysis Summarize outcomes of incident dialysis patients after hospitalization Recognize new antidiabetes medications and the implication for nephrologists Apply clinical pearls in managing patients with kidney stones Integrate recent treatment strategies for ANCA vasculitis into practice Identify strategies for kidney transplantations across blood barrier Describe short- and long-term issues for kidney donors For the Bedside Ultrasonography Workshop: Perform ultrasound of the kidneys, bladder, large vessels and lungs Recognize common pathology detected by ultrasound examination Review and apply the principles of central line placement For the ABIM Medical Knowledge Modules session: Complete two Self-Evaluation of Medical Knowledge modules, worth 10 points each toward the ABIM Maintenance of Certification Attendance at this Mayo course does not indicate nor guarantee competence or proficiency in the performance of any procedures which may be discussed or taught in this course. General Information DATE AND LOCATION The 14th Annual Update in Nephrology and Kidney Transplantation will be held September 18-19, 2015. Course headquarters will be located at the Radisson Blu Minneapolis Downtown, 35 South 7th Street, Minneapolis, MN 55402 in Scandinavian Ballroom 3. Saturday afternoon sessions: ABIM Maintenance of Certification Modules In order to earn a total of 20 points toward the Medical Knowledge portion of the ABIM Maintenance of Certification Process, participants in the Saturday afternoon sessions must: Enroll in the ABIM Maintenance of Certification program, which can be done online via the ABIM web site https://www.abim.org/moc/policies.aspx Order the Self-Evaluation of Medical Knowledge modules for 2015 Update in Nephrology and 2015 Update in Internal Medicine via the physician log-in section of the ABIM web site: http://www.abim.org/ specialty/nephrology.aspx Submit the answers to the questions to the ABIM for scoring. Instructions for this are provided when the module is ordered from the ABIM. If claiming the AMA PRA Category 1 Credits, you may only claim credit with either the ABIM or Mayo School of Continuous Professional Development. You may not claim credit with both organizations. Conference registrants are welcome to attend this session even if not enrolled in the ABIM Maintenance of Certification program.
