This fundraising event supports the efforts of A Safe Place, a nonprofit organization that provides a safety net for survivors of domestic violence and their families. Last year we served over 14,000 neighbors here in Lake County. Last year we had over 400 participants who raised $55,000 and are confident that this year will be even larger! We were going to have a big party with all my friends. But that morning, when I woke up and walked out to the living room and I saw a brand new bike standing there, my dad started yelling really loud. He pushed mom against the wall and hit me. It left a red mark on my face and I started crying really hard until he told me to shut up and be quiet. After that, dad started getting angry more and more and would hit and yell at mom all the time. I could hear it through the walls when they thought I was sleeping. We went to the emergency room a lot to fix my broken arm or for concussions after dad would beat me. But the scariest, was a couple months ago when he choked mom until she passed out. That was the night the nurse gave us a phone number to call. She said the people at the number could help us. When I got home the next day, mom had our bags packed. We were going to A Safe Place. Everyone was really nice and welcoming. I was nervous, but they told me that it was okay to still be scared and nervous. I learned a lot talking to my counselor. I didn t know other kids could talk at the dinner table. I didn t know other kids didn t have holes in their walls. I didn t know other dads didn t hurt their kids. I wasn t allowed to talk a lot at home. Being quiet was the only way to stay safe. But the counselors have made it okay to talk about what happened. I finally realized I can use my voice.
