WOLFSON FERTILITY CENTRE Wolfson Fertility Centre

Innovative, expert care The Wolfson Fertility Centre at Hammersmith Hospital is one of the leading centres for reproductive medicine in the world, with a long history and an enviable reputation for innovative fertility services. Our clinic was established by Professor, Lord Robert Winston in 1982 to provide IVF for both NHS and self-funding patients, and the team was responsible for the first IVF birth in London. It is now established as one of the largest fertility services in the UK. Being part of an internationally renowned NHS Trust offers tremendous benefits to our private patients. It means we can offer you world-class expert care alongside seamless support from other hospital departments if your situation requires it. As a result we can often treat people with complex fertility challenges that are not able to be treated in other clinics. Our academic links with Imperial College London mean that we remain at the forefront of reproductive science. We work closely with academic clinicians and scientists to ensure that we continue to lead the field of reproductive medicine. We often have clinical trials and research in progress and staff will be happy to discuss these with you, if your situation is appropriate. Our ethos is to only provide care based on strong scientific evidence. We will always carefully analyse any potential fertility intervention before it is offered to our patients, and will only introduce it to our clinic if it passes the robust selection criteria laid out by our scientific experts. We pride ourselves on the level of care we provide for our patients, and we deliver consistently high IVF success rates. To find out our most recent results, please visit www.hfea.gov.uk. We had wonderful care from our very first appointment. 02

Our team All our consultants are accredited sub-specialists in reproductive medicine who are recognised both nationally and internationally as leaders in their field. Our world-class embryologists are also accredited to the highest standards. Many of the senior embryologists across the country were trained at Hammersmith Hospital by our team. Our wider team is made up of experienced nurses and laboratory technicians as well as our administration staff. We all take pride in our roles to make sure our patients have the very best experience possible during what may be an emotional time. Many of our patients have said that the support given before, during and after their treatment made a real difference to the way they were able to prepare and cope with the whole experience. Our team also includes an accredited counsellor who can offer emotional support and help navigate the complex issues that can arise when it is difficult to have a baby. 04

Staff have all been friendly, accessible and extremely professional. 05

Fertility investigation We offer a comprehensive range of investigations for couples with fertility problems. We use our hospital laboratory for blood tests ensuring that we provide the highest quality and most consistent results. Our unit is equipped with the latest ultrasound machines and we provide ultrasound examinations as well as HyCoSy (a technique for checking whether fallopian tubes are blocked), 3D and 4D scans. Our clinical team are amongst the most experienced in the field of reproductive medicine, ensuring that your tests are carried out with a diagnostic accuracy that is second to none. Preserving your fertility Our storage facility at Hammersmith Hospital has one of the best records for storing sperm, eggs or embryos in the country. Our clinical and laboratory teams have extensive experience in this field and there is no safer place for long term storage. We can also support patients that are due to embark on chemotherapy treatment. As chemotherapy can affect fertility, we can store eggs or sperm prior to treatment, giving patients the chance of parenthood in the future. Our location in one of London s major teaching hospitals ensures that we are able to look after people with complex health challenges in close collaboration with colleagues specialising in cancer medicine. We are also increasingly seeing women who wish to freeze their eggs for fertility preservation. In all cases we are able to provide clear, scientifically proven advice to let our patients make an informed choice. 06

Our treatment options We offer full investigations for the causes of infertility and a full range of fertility options including: fertility investigations (e.g. blood tests, ultrasound etc.) endometrial scratch in-vitro fertilisation (IVF)/ intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) Pre implantation genetic screening Pre implantation genetic diagnosis frozen embryo replacement cycles intrauterine insemination (IUI) donor eggs/sperm genetic testing fertility preservation reproductive surgery Depending on your situation, IUI (intrauterine insemination) may be recommended as an alternative option to IVF (in vitro fertilisation). It is a simpler, less invasive method and is often a useful treatment for women who have irregular cycles (mainly due to polycystic ovaries) or for couples or single women who need to use donor sperm. Reproductive surgery We are a leading centre for reproductive surgery and offer a comprehensive range of surgical options for fertility problems. Our aim is to restore fertility wherever possible and give you the best chance of conception, whether naturally or with additional fertility treatment. Our consultants are recognised experts in this field have particular expertise in providing surgery for intra-uterine adhesions (Asherman s syndrome) and fibroids. We are able to offer a full range of minimally invasive surgical procedures including myomectomy (the removal of fibroids) and surgery of the fallopian tubes. Although the risks of complications after surgery are small, as we are part of a larger NHS Trust you will have the added reassurance of access to emergency care, if it should ever be needed. 8

Sperm or egg donation If you are considering treatment with a donor egg or sperm then our team will be able to inform you about these options. We can advise on reputable donor sperm banks that allow you to make your own choice of donor. We can also provide treatment where the sperm donor is known to you and will advise you regarding the best and safest way to achieve this. You and your prospective donor will have the opportunity to meet with our counsellor to discuss the implications of creating your family through egg or sperm donation. Support and counselling The experience of infertility can be both difficult and stressful. It may affect every aspect of your life, including relationships with family, friends and work colleagues. Our counselling service is here to support you and provide an opportunity to talk through the difficulties. All of our counselling is delivered in-house and is led by a senior accredited member of the British Infertility Counselling Association. Many of our patients have said that the support given before, during and after their treatment made a real difference to the way they were able to prepare and cope with the whole experience. 10

I learned some really good coping strategies and got a different perspective.
