Fundraising supports the Alzheimer s Association About Walk to End Alzheimer s Walk to End Alzheimer s is the nation s largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimers care, support and research. When you participate in Walk to End Alzheimer s, you and your team join other frontline champions in the growing movement to end Alzheimer s. Where does the money raised go? About 80 cents of every dollar raised by teams goes directly to support programs and services for the 142,000 people with Alzheimer s and their families in Massachusetts and New Hampshire, and to advance research to improve care and end Alzheimer s disease. Funds raised through Walk to End Alzheimer s in 2010 helped to: Provide information to more than 8,000 callers through our 24/7 Helpline. Provide over 1,000 free consultations through our in-depth counseling program, Care Consultation. Launch a Later Stage Phone Forum Series providing families caring for those with advanced dementia the opportunity to learn remotely about Alzheimers care giving. Reach over 10,000 people through educational programs to families and professionals. Support proposed legislation on regulations for dementia special care units in nursing homes, a Silver Alert program to protect against wandering, and a comprehensive Alzheimers State Plan. Figures about Alzheimer s disease In the United States, there are 5.4 million people with Alzheimer s disease; by 2050, experts predict that there will be as many as 16 million cases in the U.S. Alzheimer s disease is a disorder that causes the gradual loss of brain cells and is the leading cause of dementia. Today someone develops Alzheimer s every 69 seconds. Alzheimer s is the 6 th leading cause of death in the U.S. Alzheimer s disease and other dementias cost our healthcare system an estimated $183 billion a year in the U.S.
