Children s Medical Research Institute Children s Medical Research Institute is internationally respected for its history of significant medical advances. Since its founding almost 60 years ago, it has saved and improved the lives of countless children by developing the paediatric heart and lung life support machine, pioneering microsurgery for infants, introducing rubella vaccinations, and conducting the first gene therapy trial for a genetic disease in Australia.
Jeans for Genes Jeans for Genes began in 1994 as a fundraising campaign to directly support the work of the scientists at Children s Medical Research Institute. 2018 will mark the 25th Anniversary of this unique event. In that time, more than 12,000 schools, 20,000 individuals, and 41,000 workplaces have taken part in Jeans for Genes and raised over $60 million for paediatric medical research. For a quarter of a century, the Jeans for Genes campaign has provided the vital funds required to ensure the scientists at CMRI remain at the forefront of advances in child health. Progress includes: new drugs to treat epilepsy and the development of gene therapies to cure a range of genetic diseases. Our most recent initiative, ProCan, is a world-first project which will forever change the way we diagnose and treat all types of cancer affecting children and adults. In 2018, to commemorate the 25th anniversary of this iconic campaign, Children s Medical Research Institute seeks to raise $25 million for a new Centre of Collaboration. This Centre will bring together genetic research scientists and hospitalbased clinicians to search for treatments and cures for genetic conditions affecting Australian children. And we will continue to help those with other rare genetic diseases including cancer, epilepsy, blindness and autism.
