HALIFAX COMMUNITY COLLEGE DENTAL HYGIENE PROGRAM ADMISSIONS PROCEDURES FOR FALL 2018 QUALIFICATION DEADLINE FEBRUARY 9, 2018 Dental Hygienist A dental hygienist is a licensed preventative oral care professional that provides educational, clinical, and therapeutic services to the public. In order to become prepared to perform these services, the dental hygienist requires an extensive educational background. Most people first meet the dental hygienist in a private dental office where the hygienist performs many critical services that detect, prevent, and treat diseases of the mouth. Career paths for the dental hygienist include positions in clinical dentistry, administration, education, research, consumer advocacy, hospital dentistry, and public health. Responsibilities of a Licensed Dental Hygienist Dental Hygiene graduates from our program will be able to: Perform infection control procedures. Perform general and oral health assessments. Provide nutritional counseling and self-care programs to prevent disease. Examine head, neck, and oral regions for disease. Expose and process radiographs and perform other diagnostic tests. Complete oral prophylaxis and other preventive services. Administer medications prescribed by a licensed dentist. Provide oral hygiene care instruction. Place and remove temporary fillings and periodontal dressings. Remove sutures. Halifax Community College Dental Hygiene Program Mission The mission of the Dental Hygiene Program is to facilitate the development of professional, ethical, and competent entry-level dental hygienists that exhibit the following: An awareness of their present and future roles and responsibilities within the profession and the community served. The knowledge and clinical skills necessary to provide comprehensive care to patients. A commitment to lifelong learning and professional development. The dental hygiene curriculum provides the dental hygiene student with the knowledge and skills to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate dental hygiene care for the individual and the community. The curriculum also teaches the dental hygiene student to collaborate with the dentist, the patient, and other health professionals to provide comprehensive patient care. Graduates will receive an Associate of Applied Science Degree and will be eligible to take National and State/Regional Dental Hygiene Board Examinations.

MINIMUM ADMISSIONS REQUIREMENTS All (#1-7) items must be completed and submitted by February 9, 2018. 1. Submit a completed Halifax Community College Application (www.halifaxcc.edu) indicating Dental Hygiene (A45260) as the Program of Study 2. Submit official transcripts a. records of high school graduation or equivalency b. all post-secondary transcripts 3. Complete requirements for DRE 098, DMA 010, DMA 020, DMA 030, DMA 040, DMA 050 or the equivalent course(s) with a C or better. Students who are enrolled in any of these courses during the Spring 2017 semester will not be considered for Fall 2018 admission in the Dental Hygiene Program 4. Attend a Dental Hygiene Information Session at Halifax Community College and complete the Health Sciences Admission Form. Students are required to attend an information session for Fall 2017 admissions even if a previous information session has been attended. Information Sessions are located in Room B126 in the Allied Health Sciences Building All sessions will last approximately 1 to 1 ½ hours, and begin on time Adult (only) family members are welcome, please do not bring children No registration is required to attend an information session There will be NO individual Information Sessions Monday September 11, 2017 5:00 p.m. Tuesday October 10, 2017 5:00 p.m. Wednesday November 15, 2017 5:00 p.m. Thursday January 11, 2018 5:00 p.m. Friday February 2, 2018 10:00 a.m. 5. Provide evidence of an overall 2.5 GPA 6. Submit a Career Readiness Certificate (CRC) at the Silver Level (5) or above http://www.crcnc.com/info/silver.aspx The CRC is available through HCC s Continuing Education Department. Students are tested in 3 areas: (1) Applied Mathematics, (2) Reading for Information, and (3) Locating Information. Students may complete the Certification testing at any time, and may remediate and re-test on any or all areas of the test. The cost for testing is $30 initially to complete all parts of the test, then $10 for any portion of the test that must be re-taken. Scores of 5 (Gold Certificate) or 6 (Platinum Certificate) will increase the overall points in the ranking process. The CRC test may be taken at any North Carolina college offering the test, but a copy of the certificate/scores, with the certification number, must be submitted to the HCC admissions department by the deadline. 3.Completed Certificate of Current Enrollment in an ADA Accredited Dental Assisting Program Form Application Deadline Admission to the dental hygiene program is limited to eighteen (18) students each August. Applications will be accepted through February 9, 2018. Applicants must have submitted all required documents to the Admissions Office, including all test scores by February 9, 2018. It is the applicant s responsibility to ensure that all required documents are submitted by the established deadline. Deadlines, guidelines, and policies apply equally to all students. Halifax Community College does not maintain a waiting list. Applicants to the Dental Hygiene Program must reapply each year. Dental Hygiene Student Selection Process The Dental Hygiene Program uses a point system for admission selection. Preference will be given to students with the highest point scores based on selection criteria which include all completed documentation that is submitted by the deadline of February 9, 2018. 2018 Application Checklist 1.
