About Crohn s disease and ulcerative colitis Crohn s disease and ulcerative colitis, known collectively as inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), are devastating chronic illnesses that attack the digestive system. There are 1 in 200 Americans living with IBD. We do not know what causes these diseases and there are no medical cures. 150,000 (about 10 percent) of people with IBD are children under age 18. Most people develop the diseases between ages 15 and 35. Children under 18 are the fastest-growing patient population and are often the most severely impacted by the diseases. Crohn s and ulcerative colitis are extremely painful and debilitating. Due to the unpredictable nature of these diseases, patients never know when they might spend two weeks in the hospital, require surgery, or miss work or a personal event. Symptoms may include abdominal pain, persistent diarrhea, rectal bleeding, fever, and weight loss. Many patients have complications affecting other body parts anemia from blood loss, Inflammation of the eyes, joint pain, and more. IBD has a significant emotional and physical impact on patients. The average patient is misdiagnosed twice. The number of Crohn s & colitis cases has increased 20 times since World War II. Approximately 20 percent of patients have another family member with Crohn s or colitis. About the Crohn s & Colitis Foundation of America Founded in 1967, the Crohn s & Colitis Foundation of America (CCFA) is the leading non-profit organization dedicated to finding cures for Crohn s disease and ulcerative colitis. 80 cents of every dollar raised goes back to the mission which is to cure Crohn s disease and ulcerative colitis and to improve the quality of life of children and adults living with these diseases. CCFA s mission is to cure Crohn s disease and ulcerative colitis, and to improve the quality of life of children and adults affected by these diseases. The Foundation consistently meets standards established by the Better Business Bureau Wise Giving Alliance as well as other charity watchdog organizations, and recently received a Four Star rating from Charity Navigator. With more than 1,400 grants awarded, and an investment of over $200 million since the organization s inception, CCFA has played a role in every major scientific breakthrough in IBD. CCFA is the leader in research, education, and patient support for IBD. A champion for the 1 in 200 Americans who suffer from these diseases, CCFA strives to inspire, instill hope, and create a community which empowers patients and improves their quality of life.
