Physical Activity Program (PDHPE) Unit: Gymnastics Time Allocation: 10 Weeks (10 x 40min lesson) Strands covered: Gymnastics, Games & Sports, Dance, Active Lifestyle Communication, Decision Making, Interacting, Moving, Problem Solving Principal Focus: Exploring the different ways the body can move and provide a foundation for skills associated with movement activities. Provide students with the opportunity to explore what their bodies can do, the space within which their bodies can move and the environment within which such movements take place. This will be achieved through movement exploration experience involving locomotor and non-locomotor skills, leading to acquisition of some specific gymnastic skills. Outcomes Knowledge & Understanding GYES1.10 Performs basic movement patterns to show actions of the whole body. GSES1.8 Demonstrates fundamental movement skills while playing and sharing equipment. DAES1.7 Moves in response to various stimuli. ALES1.6 Develops a repertoire of physical activities in which they can participate. Skills COES1.1 Express feelings, needs and wants in appropriate ways. DMES1.2 Identifies some options available when making simple decisions. INES1.3 Relates well to others in work and play situations. MOES1.4 Demonstrates a general awareness of how basic movement skills apply in play and other introductory movement experiences. PSES1.5 Seeks help as needed when faced with simple problems. V5 Willingly participates in regular physical activity V6 Commits to realizing their full potential Indicators Knowledge & Understanding Identify ways in which their body can travel and form shapes Explores movement patterns using different parts of the body, e.g. climb on, through and over play equipment; slide along benches; crawl under bars Makes different shapes with the body while in contact with the ground using large bases of support Experiments with different ways of transferring weight from one body part to an adjacent body part Moves in relation to others, personal and imposed space Shows a number of different ways to move to express an idea Takes part in different types of physical activity Listens to music and moves body parts to beat Observes and repeats movements that require action of the whole body Plays follow the leader to explore different levels and directions Explores different ways the body can move to portray various images Moves safely when sharing confined space with others Replicates simple combinations of skills Shows understanding of the language used in games by responding to verbal and non verbal directions Identifies a variety of games and play equipment Participates in games where cooperation is important for success Skills Responds to simple instructions and rules Plays simple response games Uses correct vocabulary for body movements Chooses between safe and unsafe situations Observes rules and procedures that keep them safe Learns to share equipment, material and workspace Maintains stillness of head and trunk when balancing Stretches and curls the body at levels (high & low) Walks, runs, slides at different tempos/speeds Climbs up, through, under, over apparatus Asks for help when injured or hurt Follows advice on how to use new equipment Accepts being told no when appropriate Values the importance of physical activity to health Enjoys regular participation in worthwhile physical activity Appreciates the need to participate in physical activity with safety Recognizes the aesthetic and technical qualities of movement
