presents M ario Batali Table Captain Packet for Hopelink s 21st Annual Reaching Out Luncheon Monday, October 24
A Message from our Luncheon Chairs Dear friends, Hopelink s annual Reaching Out Luncheon every October is both a celebration and an opportunity. It is a time to honor our successes and expand our dreams, and to find inspiration in the extraordinary work Hopelink is doing in our community every single day. And it is a chance for you to make a difference, right here at home. The 2016 Reaching Out Luncheon will take place on Monday, October 24 at the Meydenbauer Center in Bellevue, and as chairs of this year s luncheon, we are excited to invite you to join us as a Table Captain for the 21st annual event. Hopelink s Reaching Out Luncheon is the Eastside s largest fundraiser, drawing nearly 1,800 supporters. At last year s record-breaking event, we raised more than $1.2 million to change the lives of people in need. Our 167 Table Captains brought in $886,401 of this total an average of $5,000 per table! So clearly, Table Captains are essential to the luncheon s success. And whether you are new to the idea of hosting a table or you are returning for another year, we are so grateful for your willingness to help us help our neighbors in need. We are committed to the work Hopelink is doing in the community, and we are also committed to ensuring that the 2016 luncheon is the best ever. Please help us reach that goal on October 24! With gratitude, Kari & Drew Magill Shawna & Geoff Deane Reaching Out Luncheon Chairs
Guest Speaker Mario Batali... unlike curing cancer or heart disease, we already know how to beat hunger: food. -Mario Batali Behind the fleece vest, baggy Bermuda shorts and orange Crocs, the personality known as Molto Mario is an acclaimed restaurateur, award-winning chef, best-selling author and TV personality. Yet despite an impressive string of accomplishments, Mario Batali s culinary chops are only part of the man: he also shares Hopelink s commitment to feeding people in need. The energetic Batali is convinced hunger is a solvable issue, and that, unlike curing cancer or heart disease, we already know how to beat hunger: food. He created the Mario Batali Foundation in 2008 to ensure that children are well read, well fed and well cared for, while Batali also is a staunch supporter of nutrition education programs and ensuring emergency food resources for low-income families. Born and raised in Seattle, Batali s local roots run deep. In 1903, Batali s grandfather opened Metropolitan Grocery Seattle s first Italian food import store in Pioneer Square. Nearly a century later, Batali s father, a retired Boeing engineer, pursued his own culinary dream, launching Salumi restaurant nearby. Salumi is still a local icon for artisan cured meats and other Italian foods. Batali grew up on both sides of the Cascades, in a family that cooked together, picked blackberries for pies and jam and smoked their own salmon. He was a student of Spanish Theatre at Rutgers University when he got hooked on the adrenaline-fueled teamwork of restaurant life, working in a small New Jersey pizzeria. Batali never looked back. Although trained at Le Cordon Bleu in London, it was three intense years of studying the history and culture of Italian cuisine in a tiny Italian village that truly shaped Batali s career. Currently appearing as a host of ABC s The Chew, Batali also is the author of 10 cookbooks. Release of his next book: Mario Batali Big American Cookbook, will coincide with his Hopelink appearance in October.
