This report reflects the number of cases of reportable communicable diseases for which individuals in Manitoba tested positive* during the month of March 2007. Communicable Diseases In total, there were 38 new infections occurring across 9 communicable diseases** (excluding sexually transmitted infections and HIV) in March 2007. The observed numbers of cases were within the expected range for all of the reported communicable diseases with the exception of 35 cases of MRSA with the expected range of 0-22 cases. The expected number of cases and accompanying range is based on the number of cases during February, March and April 2002-2006. Both MRSA and Clostridium difficile accounted for 68.55% of all non-sti/hiv related communicable diseases reported to Manitoba Health. The C. difficile tend to concentrate in the 60+ age group, while cases of MRSA are reported in all age groups. Sexually Transmitted Infections & Blood-Borne Pathogens There were 20 cases of sexually transmitted infections (chlamydia, gonorrhoea, and syphilis) in March: 328 cases of chlamydia (Ct), 50 cases of gonorrhoea (GC), GC-Ct co-infections, and case of syphilis. More than half (50.8%) of all GC and Ct cases in the province were reported among females of age group 5-2 years. Less than half of all GC and Ct cases (5%) were reported for individuals living in the Winnipeg health region, and an additional 8% were from the Burntwood health region. In March, 26 individuals tested positive for hepatitis C virus in Manitoba, and 5 of them were reported from the Winnipeg health region. About 85% of all HCV positive cases were in the 30-59 years age groups. Eight Manitobans, five males and three females, tested positive for HIV in March 2007. PS: Two more cases of HIV were also observed during the month of March 2007, making a total of 0 cases (6 males and females).

*Note: Data for the monthly summary are aggregated based on the earliest of: symptom onset date, specimen collection date, or report date. For the majority of cases, the date used will be the specimen collection date. **Note: The following communicable diseases are reportable to the Director of Communicable Disease Control for surveillance purposes, and are not reported out for public health follow-up: ascariasis (ICD9: 27.0) clostridium difficile (ICD9: 558.2) leishmaniasis unspecified (ICD9: 085.9) methicillin or vancomycin resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA/VRSA) penicillin-resistant streptococcus pneumoniae (ICD9: 8.9) schistosomiasis (ICD9: 20) streptococcus pneumoniae other site (ICD9: 0.2) strongyloides (ICD9: 27.2) vancomycin resistant enterococci (VRE) tuberculosis (ICD9: 03, 0, 00 cases and contacts of tuberculosis are managed by the Provincial Tuberculosis Control Programme located at the Health Sciences Centre) Cheers, Dr. Suresh Khatkar Epidemiologist, Communicable Diseases
