Overview of Gay Men s Health Crisis (GMHC) Our Mission: GMHC fights to end the AIDS epidemic and uplift the lives of all affected. February 2014 GMHC is a not-for-profit, volunteer-supported and community-based organization committed to national leadership in the fight against AIDS. We provide HIV prevention and coordinated care services to men, women, and families living with or affected by HIV/AIDS in New York City. We advocate for scientific, evidence-based public health solutions for hundreds of thousands of people worldwide. For the past 32 years, GMHC has been a constant leader in the fight against HIV and AIDS at local, state and national levels. GMHC has remained committed to serving those in greatest need and has worked diligently to evolve and expand with the changing needs of the population it serves. Today, GMHC provides a comprehensive array of services and programs, including: GMHC 446 West 33 rd Street New York, NY 10001 212.367.1000 GMHC Helpline: 1.800.243.7692 helpline@gmhc.org press@gmhc.org David Geffen Center for HIV Prevention and Health Education 224 West 29 th Street New York, NY 10011 212.367.1100 VISIT US ON: our website: gmhc.org our microsites: mymethlife.org and myballroomlife.com our blog: gmhc.org/blog Facebook: gmhc Twitter: gmhc Pinterest: gmhc Instagram: gmhc Youtube: GMHCWomen, TheLunaShowNY and TheLunchBoxNYC Client Intake offers comprehensive and holistic intake, assessment and reassessment services to HIV positive and at-risk clients to ensure they are effectively linked to vital programmatic services. The department is the entry point in GMHC s model of continuum of care and is staffed by trained intake clinicians and support staff. Community Health and Research develops new approaches to HIV prevention for marginalized populations who are under-represented in the healthcare sector, with a particular emphasis on LGBTQ communities and women of color. These communities have been disproportionately impacted by HIV and face other challenges and health disparities that often exacerbate their risk for HIV and other health conditions. Through a community-based outreach model, we seek to identify the most effective models of care and prevention to improve the healthcare outcome for these individuals. The department utilizes an expansive toolkit of community health that includes advocacy, public policy, public health research, social marketing, and outreach to engage individuals at high-risk of HIV infection or lacking HIV/STI-specific care. In the pursuit of these objectives, the department partners with diverse organizations in the governmental, private, and non-profit sectors, and our work spans local, national, and international levels. Coordinated Care connects clients affected by HIV/AIDS to vital community resources and assists in the negotiating and coordinating the care. The department advocates on behalf of the individual, their families, and significant others, to ensure that they have access to comprehensive medical care, health insurance, entitlements, housing, food, substance use services, dental and mental health providers, job training services, support groups, and treatment education. The goal is to provide each client with the tools to become stable and self-sufficient. The David Geffen Center for HIV Prevention and Health Education effectively combines a highly successful, community outreach HIV and STI testing and counseling program with immediate connection to care and prevention services. It also provides referrals to programs that empower clients with the knowledge to maximize their well-being in the context of broader health concerns, specifically in connection with substance use and adherence to HIV medications. Health Informatics is the hub for data management, quality assurance, and research and evaluation related to program services. The department is responsible for the collection of valid and reliable data for the purposes of program evaluation and monitoring. In addition, the department develops and implements reporting systems that promote reflection, informed decision-making and the use of information to continuously improve the quality and strategic aspects of GMHC s work. Dissemination is a key function as findings from evaluation and research projects are distributed internally and externally including presentations at national and local conferences, and publications in peer-reviewed journals. Legal Services assists clients in obtaining and maintaining basic life-sustaining services, including access to food, housing, medical care, and employment. The department focuses on HIV-related discrimination in the workplace and elsewhere, bankruptcy and debtor-creditor issues, homelessness prevention, family law, child custody, permanency planning, immigration, and access to benefits and entitlements. The Michael Palm Center for AIDS Care and Support empowers HIV positive and at-risk clients by stabilizing their lives in the areas of housing, income support, and access to healthcare. It also provides one-on-one and group services that address depression, substance use, and sexual risk-taking behaviors. The services are targeted to specific populations most affected by the epidemic through programs including the Women s Care, Prevention and Support Services, Outstanding Beautiful Brothers, Many Men, Many Voices and Substance Use Counseling and Education. Public Policy advocates for fair and effective HIV/AIDS policies at all levels of government, including expanded access to healthcare and services. The department also focuses advocacy efforts on the development of new, improved and less expensive methods for the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of HIV and AIDS. The Volunteer, Work and Wellness Center offers services devoted to the overall health of clients, including nutritious meals, nutrition counseling, therapeutic art, and complementary therapies such as acupuncture, yoga, and massage therapy. The Work Center offers a comprehensive array of educational, GED, job readiness, training, job placement, and retention services for people living with or at risk for HIV/AIDS in order to build economic self-sufficiency. The Volunteer Center recruits, trains, and supports volunteers and interns who offer help in a wide range of tasks.

Fundraising Tips from Experts RITA FISCHER WALKING FOR 30 YEARS Every donor knows that I am a mother who cares deeply about this cause. People give because I share my personal story. FRANCINE GOLDSTEIN WALKING FOR 27 YEARS My commitment to the memory of my best friend drives my commitment to AIDS Walk. I am not too timid to ask everyone I know for a donation, and I always look for new people to ask even the salesperson at Sleepy s! IAN JOPSON WALKING FOR 11 YEARS I follow the 7 Tap Rule. It means that most people need to be asked 7 times before they will take action, so I send out at LEAST 10 emails over the course of my campaign to potential donors! Try to make each email different, and always speak from the heart!. 16

Plan a Fundraising Event Committee Organize a group of Team Members that can help plan the event. Do you have members that can t make the event but committed to helping in other ways? This is it! Choose an Event Think of successful fundraising events you have attended and the resources you are able to secure. Have a neighborhood bar? Happy hour fundraiser! Have lots of talented friends? Hold a talent show! Location Find a venue that is centrally located and able to accommodate the type of fundraiser you plan to have. Date and Time If you re unsure what day to have your event, work with the venue you just secured to figure out a day and time that works best for them. Promote Make sure everyone you know is aware of your event! Use Facebook, send emails, and make flyers. Make sure you encourage everyone to bring a friend! Reminders are key and people forget, so a head s up the day before is always appreciated! Event Day! On the day of your fundraising event, make sure you take pictures not only to remember all the fun from that day, but to encourage those that couldn t make it to donate directly to the team instead. Thank you! A successful event couldn t have happened without the help of your committee and attendees. Make sure you thank them via email or thank you cards, and give them an update on how the event went! Showing gratitude goes a long way and encourages everyone to continue supporting the team. TIP! Incentives Having a raffle or selling homemade food always makes an event more special and can increase how much your event raises! 17

Matching Gifts What? A matching gift is a donation made by a corporation or foundation in support of an employee s contribution to a nonprofit organization. Use the search engine below to find out if your company has a matching gift program in place. Can t find your company? Talk to your human resources department to find out. Search Engine: http://ny.aidswalk.net/matching-gift-info Examples: Macy s, West Elm, Pfizer, Thompson Reuters, UBS, Starbucks, Gap Inc. Why? Matching gifts are an increasingly vital resource for many nonprofit organizations because of their ability to double, triple, or even quadruple an individual s contribution. How?...to receive credit: Please forward the email confirmation of the online Matching Gift Form to matchinggiftny@aidswalk.net. Make sure to include the dollar amount of the match, the donor s name, and the walker s name in the email. *If the email confirmation is not sent to us ahead of time, the walker may print it out and turn it in on the day of the AIDS Walk at Sign-In. to start an informal matching gift program: Employees. Ask your boss, CEO, or other company executive if they will match what your team raises or perhaps sponsor the first 25 walkers to register. Keep in mind that your matching program does not only have to be dollar-for-dollar ; it can be any ratio you agree on. Just ask! Students. Schools do not usually have formal matching gift programs, but many creative students lobby to create one. An informal match program can be an agreement with the principal/dean to match the amount the team collected during an AIDS Walk San Francisco campaign. Suggest that your school donate $1 for every walker on your team who shows up and walks on the actual day of the event. Get creative and watch your team achieve fundraising success. 19
