Kenya: RECENT FMD EVENTS/ACTIVITIES IN POOL 4 Have had confirmed 32 reports of O (in Eastern, Central and Rift valley) and15 SAT2 reports (mainly in Rift Valley and Central) between January and mid June 2012. Selected samples for 2011-2012 sent to WRL Pirbright Uganda: - Unconfirmed outbreaks in Eastern and NE In May 2012 Outbreaks near border with DRC, with mortality among calves. Samples yet to be analyzed Associated with increased livestock from Eastern Uganda
HIGHLIGHT ON RECENT FMD EVENTS IN POOL 4 Tanzania: Upgrading of FMD lab to BSL3 DRC: In May recorded 2 outbreaks near national park bordering Rwanda and Burundi. Serotypes unconfirmed Associated with animal imports from neighbours. Djibouti: No reported events lately
HIGHLIGHT ON RECENT FMD EVENTS IN POOL 4 Eritrea: In the process of shipping 2011 samples to WRL Ethiopia: March 2012 to May 2012; A total of 6535 cattle have developed FMD clinical signs (near Sudan and Eritrea borders and Centro-North) FMD was confirmed by 3ABC ELISA No genotyping yet due to limited resources
HIGHLIGHT ON RECENT FMD EVENTS IN POOL 4 Rwanda: No FMD reported lately border surveillances intensified fearing incursions from neighbours. Somalia: Un-reported and undiagnosed outbreaks. Risk assessment surveys are ongoing. Sudan (North): On-going but un-diagnosed outbreaks. Sudan (South): Outbreaks un-diagnosed-limited capacity Socio-economic and countrywide sero-surveillance completed.
REGIONAL PROGRAMS AND CONTROL ROADMAP VISIONS FOR 2022 Out of the 14 countries, 12 are actively participating in the regional Eastern Africa FMD Roadmap Latest selfassessments; all countries were in PCP- FMD Stage 1 except South Sudan (Stage 0) See table...

POOL 4: ON-GOING ACTIVITIES IN THE REGION Internationally-funded projects VETGOV on improving veterinary service governance (EU/FAO/OIE); Regional laboratory and epidemiology networks - EARLN- FMD (EuFMD/FAO) and EAREN (USAID/EC) Real-Time training courses (EuFMD/FAO) Scattered research projects in individual countries including wildlife surveillances... Individual country efforts progress in PCP (Identification of risks and developing strategic FMD control plans).

CONCLUSION Majority of countries will be wholly or zonally beyond stage 1 by 2016 and at least in stage3 by 2022 Relentless Global support, regional approach and harmonized efforts will go a long way in helping realise PCP roadmap goals If all efforts envisaged in the regional and individual national plans are fully implemented, vision 2022 will be a reality
