Register Now!!! 14 th Kansas Disability Caucus August 9-10, 2018 Ramada Inn, Topeka, KS

2018 KANSAS DISABILITY CAUCUS The 14th Kansas Disability Caucus will be held in Topeka, KS on August 9th and 10th, 2018. People with all types of disabilities, of all ages, representing every county of the State, are invited to attend. The purpose of the Kansas Disability Caucus is to provide opportunities for Kansans with disabilities to learn, share, and provide solutions to issues faced by the disability community. In 1988 ninety people attended the first Kansas Disability Caucus in Salina, KS. The outcome of these individuals coming together was a united charge to pass the first consumer directed personal care assistance program in Kansas. It has been common to have leaders in the disability rights movement, such as Ed Roberts, Andy Imparato, and Kelly Buckland, speak at the Caucus in the past. One of the vital pieces of the KS Disability Caucus has always been to have participants divide into three regions where we gather their concerns on issues or barriers to their independence and potential solutions that they may have. Another important part is the opportunity for participants to gain information about topics and issues occurring that affect Kansans with disabilities and our rights to live independently in our communities and make choices in our lives. This year's Caucus theme is Moving Forward: Turning Setbacks Into Comebacks! Within the Federal government, there have been numerous attacks in the last year, as we expect more to come, on vital programs and civil rights laws that provide the power for people with disabilities to live healthy, independent, and productive lives. In addition, our State government has made many changes in programs that have limited or held back Kansans with disabilities from doing the same. The KS Disability Caucus believes it is time that we move forward stronger than ever, without looking back, to come out standing our ground in what we know are our rights to quality healthcare; Home and Community Based Services; accessible and affordable housing and transportation; equal employment opportunities; accessible, quality education; and protection of our civil and human rights. Although we have made some positive steps recently in the State Legislature, Kansas was a leader among the disability community across the country for many years. It is time we accept that we have had some setbacks and forge forward to make Kansas a great state for people with disabilities to live an integrated life of choice, freedom, and independence. The Kansas Disability Caucus hopes that you are able to join us on August 9th & 10th in Topeka to Move Forward by Turning Setbacks Into Comebacks!
