Health & Well Being at Work Good work is good for health and good health is good for work... Absenteeism costs the UK economy 32bn per year Staff have an average of 10 days of unscheduled absence from work annually 61% of the population is overweight and obese in Northern Ireland Action Cancer asks the following questions: How does your workplace look after you? Do you feel you have a good work/life balance? One of Action Cancer s workplace health initiatives could be just the ticket:

As a local charity with a focus on cancer prevention and detection, Action Cancer is well placed to offer a variety of health programmes to complement your organisations workplace health strategy. We have a range of existing programmes, and can tailor a bespoke package to the needs of your organisation. For more information on workplace health services with Action Cancer, please call Kerry Anderson on 028 9080 3347 or email kanderson@actioncancer.org

HEALTH AWARENESS SESSIONS Cost 95 each Action Cancer health promotion staff can provide a range of health sessions to improve awareness of cancer, advice on how to lead a healthy lifestyle and empower people to reduce cancer risk. This raises awareness of signs and symptoms of cancer, helping individuals become more aware of changes that may need investigation. Impact of Cancer Awareness Talks: In November last year, a male cancer awareness talk given by Action Cancer saved the life of one of our sub contractors employees. Something the Action Cancer health officer said clicked with him who, as a result, then went to see his doctor. The doctor referred him for more tests and when examined was immediately admitted to hospital for an operation. He was diagnosed with testicular cancer. He then underwent a course of chemotherapy and thankfully, will soon be returning to work. Sometimes these health talks are seen as a nuisance but this shows that lives are saved as a result. A big thank you to Action Cancer for coming to see us.

ACTION MAN 12 WEEK HEALTH PROGRAMME cost for 24 men 1440 Cancer in men: Men ignore health symptoms for up to two years Men have a 16% higher risk of developing cancer than women and are 40% more likely to die from the disease, and their life expectancy is 10 years less than women. Men in NI have the highest incidence of bowel cancer in Western Europe One third of men do not know where the prostate is yet the same number aged 50 and over may have prostate cancer. Over 200 men in Northern Ireland die from the disease each year yet it is very treatable if caught early. Testicular cancer is the most common cancer in men aged 15-45, affecting 60 males every year. If caught early it is easily treatable and nearly always curable. What s involved in the Action Man 12 week Health programme: 1. The 12 Week Action Man Health Programme provides an opportunity for men to have a health check and from their results set a health goal involving weight loss or fitness. 2. Over 12 weeks Action Cancer sends the Action Men weekly information to help them reach this goal and keep them motivated. 3. At the end of the 12 week period they have another health check to ascertain what they have been able to achieve.

WOMEN S HEALTH PROGRAMME Action Cancer is currently developing a 12 week health programme for women which will focus on cancer prevention, healthy lifestyles and encouraging women to take a bit of time for themselves. The programme will be for groups of women and will be delivered in workplaces and community settings. If you would be interested in submitting an initial expression of interest to hear more, please email kanderson@actioncancer.org

POP UP MOT HEALTH CLINIC full cost 25 per person (less if reduced service provision) Our staff can set up a pop up health check station in your workplace, community group or sports and social club. A variety of services are available: lung function test, blood pressure and blood glucose, cholesterol check, skin scanner and use of our full body composition scales. Clients stand on the scales in their bare feet and electrodes are sent through the body. A print out is provided detailing results: fat around vital organs, muscle mass, BMI, hydration levels, and metabolic age. In effect this is a picture of health on the inside of the body. Advice is then provided on simple changes to lifestyle that could make a difference in reducing risk of cancer, heart disease, stroke, obesity and type two diabetes. Minimum numbers for a pop up MOT health clinic: 12 Cost per person: 25 (If all of the above checks are not required, a reduced rate can be agreed.

THE BIG BUS The BIG BUS is a state-of-the-art mobile unit offering breast screening, and MOT health checks incorporating full body composition analysis. T The Big Bus can be booked for a one off visit for staff use. Impact of the Big Bus for Workplaces: One of the women whose breast cancer we detected early had treatment and was back to work within 9 months less time than many maternity leave. Cost of Big Bus is dependent on size of organisation. Quote from a lady whose breast cancer was detected on the Big Bus: I attended for breast screening in my hometown on the Big Bus and was very impresses with the manner and dignity I received from all involved.
