Electives Policy Rationale The Association of Faculties of Medicine of Canada Undergraduate Deans acknowledge the role that electives play as part of the curriculum of every medical program in Canada. To ensure that students have an appropriate breadth of curricular experiences, guidelines were developed to promote diversification of elective content. At the Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine, electives make up proportionately more curricular time than other medical schools in Canada. is even more important for this reason. Guidelines on Elective electives in the MD Program must be organized so that each student has an elective experience in a minimum of three different disciplines (defined in the following table) throughout their 24 weeks of electives, each of which shall take place for a minimum of two weeks. Eligible disciplines: Anesthesiology, Medicine, Critical Care, Medicine,, Laboratory Medicine & Pathology,, Gynecology, Pediatrics, Psychiatry, Radiology, and Surgery. Students should work with their advisors to ensure that they meet the diversification elective requirements prior to graduation. Electives are considered complete only once the diversification requirements are satisfied. In some cases, electives may be credited to several different diversification disciplines (i.e. pediatric psychiatry = pediatrics OR psychiatry). It is up to each student how they wish to allocate their electives for diversification purposes, as long as the diversification requirements are met. Electives qualify for diversification purposes only if they are clinical in nature. The chart below indicates how each elective can be classified for diversification purposes. The elective should be classified under the discipline that most accurately reflects the nature of the elective experience (i.e. a chronic pain elective may have been performed predominantly in anesthesia, family medicine, or internal medicine and should be categorized appropriately). Non-clinical electives, including reading and anatomy electives, should be classified as non-diversification, reading, or anatomy.
