Drug Alert Anyone using white powder substances needs to be especially careful as there is an influx of white heroin in the city. Please advise people to dab and wait before using as normal and test every new batch. There have been 3 deaths recently in the city caused by snorting heroin. Detox ward closure The Sussex Partnership Foundation Trust has given us notice that as of the end of March they will no longer be providing the substance misuse in-patient hospital detox beds that we commission. We are now working with SPFT and the city s Clinical Commissioning Group to draw up alternatives to meet the needs of these vulnerable people as of April. Everyone who is assessed as needing this service will continue to receive it. It has yet to be established whether this service will be based in the city or elsewhere. Please contact Mike Newman or Kristy Tanner at Pavilions if you have any questions or concerns on 0800 014 9819. 2

Fulfilling Lives: Allotment Gardening A message from Community Gardener, Amyas Gilbert about the fantastic Allotment Gardening Project: I am promoting for the new weekly allotment gardening session for people with multiple and complex needs, delivered by the Brighton & Hove Food Partnership as part of BHT Fulfilling Lives. An important aim of this project is to work with people who often can t take part in similar activities because of their particular needs (e.g. need to drink before or during the session). We really want to enable anyone who s interested to take part, so please get in touch to discuss people s needs. There s no fixed format to the gardening days. The general work is about tending to a fruit and vegetable garden, which can involve lots of different jobs; heavy physical work or much lighter jobs, and creative tasks too. As well as simply sitting by the fire and having a cup of tea and a chat, if that s what s needed. We don t demand that people attend a set number or series of sessions, so people can drop in when it suits them. It s an opportunity for people you work with (and their support/keyworkers) to spend a morning out in the beautiful Stanmer Park, benefiting from the therapeutic effects of the natural world, as well as engaging in some meaningful activity in a safe environment. If you re working with anyone who may be interested, please get in touch to talk about how we can best work with them. I m also keen to come along to team meetings to promote these sessions as well as other ongoing opportunities to volunteer at community gardens in and around town, of which there are plenty. The first session is on Thursday 3rd March and for now is set to run until Thursday 9th June, and will hopefully continue into the summer after that! For further information, you can reach me on 01273 431709, Wednesday- Friday. Amyas Gilbert Community Gardener 5

Recovery, Interventions & Group Work at Pavilions Pavilions provides a variety of group work activities throughout the week for people to explore what works best for them in feeling supported in their recovery. The programmes are built around being; person centred, recovery focussed, building on existing strengths and increasing self reliance. We acknowledge that recovery far extends the time spent working with services and therefore we aim to equip people with the skills to achieve their goals. Group work programs: Springboard is a rolling five day programme designed to introduce service users to the potential and tools of recovery, as well as an introduction to the visible recovery community in Brighton and Hove. Topics covered include; the language of recovery, acknowledging and building on recovery capital and planning short term goals. Forward is a weekly group using Cranstoun s Integrative Recovery model as a means of identifying and developing a bespoke recovery programme meaningful to the individual. This group acknowledges the past but focuses on the present. ACT (Acceptance Commitment Therapy) is a mindfulness based rolling programme which is open to anyone receiving support from Pavilions. This group helps individuals develop coping strategies for managing physical and/ or psychological pain. All of our groups are open to anyone receiving a service from us, regardless of which substance triggered the need for support. You do not have to access the groups sequentially and therefore it is not essential to attend every week. If you would like anymore information regarding our group work sessions please contact Matt, Recovery, Interventions & Group Work Team Leader at 01273 731900. 8
