It s a Mystery! Directions: We are practicing the skill of making inferences at school. Your student is learning that authors give readers clues that help the story make sense. To practice, students will write their own clues. Your child needs to choose an object and place it in the paper bag. Then, have your child write five good clues that will help others guess what the object is. We will play a game using these items at school and then they will be returned. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

My mom went to the store. She bought cough drops, hot tea and a box of tissues. Why? My grandma bought chocolate chips, flour and eggs. What is she going to do? Tammy went outside. She put on her jacket with a hood and took her umbrella. Why? A boy is wearing a party hat. He is opening presents. What is today? After lunch, my brother and I put on our boots, hats and gloves. We went outside. What were we going to do? The sand was hot. I liked to get wet to cool off. I watched a seagull fly above me. Where was I?

I woke up Saturday morning and looked out my window. It was sunny and hot. I ran downstairs. My dad said, Don t forget your towel! Where was I going? I packed my suitcase. Hurry up, we don t want to miss it! my mom yelled. We picked up our tickets and put all of our bags in the car. What were we getting ready to do? Everyone was wearing green! We read a story about leprechauns and ate Lucky Charms. What day was it? You look out your window. You see your friends outside all wearing costumes and carrying bags. What day is it? Weston fell again. He was wearing his helmet and he landed in the grass so he wasn t hurt. He got back up and watched his sister glide by him. He knew he could do it if he kept trying! What was he trying to do? Everyone was wearing red and pink. All of Lilly s classmates were carrying little cards. What day was it?

Inference Recording Page Directions: Choose a card. Record your ideas below. The clues from my card are: 1. 2. 3. Here is my inference:

Makayla studied hard for her math test. She paid attention in class and practiced with her mom. She got an A. What emoji did she text her mom after school? Sandra s little sister is sick. She was up all night crying. They share a room. What emoji did she text to her friend? Nathan s little brother took his favorite toy without asking. He dropped the toy and broke it. What emoji did he text to his friend?

Elijah was wanting to go to his friend s after school. His mom told him he had to stay home and clean his room What emoji did he text to his friend? Ava s friend helped her make a present for their teacher s birthday What emoji did she text to her friend? Hayley s grandpa got her a new puppy for her birthday. What emoji did she send her grandpa to show him how much she loves her new pet?

Carrie s mom came home to a mess in the kitchen. She texted Carrie to ask if she made the mess. Carrie assured her mother she didn t. What emoji did she text her mother? Jack just got a brand new shirt that he thinks is super cool. What emoji did he text to his friend? Bailey just texted her friend and told her that she spilled her milkshake all over the carpet. What emoji did her friend send back to her?

Emoji Inference Recording Page Directions: Draw six of the emojis and give one reason for each about why you chose that scenario to go with it. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.
