Absrobance Technical Information TEGO SUN T 805 Hydrophobically Modified Microfine Titanium Dioxide Intended use UV filter Benefits at a glance Has a high UVB absorption and a one-star rating for UVA protection Provides a synergistic SPF improvement in combination with organic UV filters No alumina coating no complex formation with Butyl Methoxydibenzoylmethane (BMDM) Facilitates excellent water resistance INCI (PCPC name) Titanium Dioxide; Trimethoxycaprylylsilane C hemical and physical properties ( not part of specifications) Form powder TiO2 content [%] > 95 ph value (4% in water) 3.0 4.0 hydrophobic coating also boosts the waterresistance of the micropigment and provides a high level of photostability. The appearance of sun screen products containing up to 10% TEGO Sun T 805 shows no whitening and is transparent on skin after rub-in. TEGO Sun T 805 can be easily dispersed into any common cosmetic oil by using high shear dispersing tools. The coating has a strong adhesion to the pigment and therefore cannot be washed away or evaporate. It covers the TiO2 particles and makes them compatible with Zinc Oxides. It can be used in formulations that contain the UVA filter Butyl Methoxydibenzoylmethane without recrystallization of the organic filter and thereby influencing its efficacy. TEGO Sun T 805 provides a superior UVB absorption with a maximum at 320 nm and additionally UVA absorption between 340 and 380 nm (Fig. 1). 1,2 1 0,8 Primary particle size [nm] 20 0,6 0,4 Pr operties 0,2 TEGO Sun T 805 is a unique microfine hydrophobic coated Titanium Dioxide with a high level of UV-B absorption. Due to its strongly hydrophobic coating, TEGO Sun T 805 offers additional benefits to the formulator. Thus, it is easily compatible with Carbomer containing O/W formulations. Combinations of TEGO Sun T 805 with organic UV absorbers and Zinc Oxide have shown powerful synergistic effects (e.g. Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate, Ethylhexyl Triazone, Phenylbenzimidazole Sulfonic Acid, Bis- Ethylhexyloxyphenol Methoxyphenyl Triazine, Diethylhexyl Butamido Triazone, Octocrylene). By utilizing TEGO Sun T 805, lower amounts of organic filters can be used to achieve the same SPF. Consumers' exposure to organic sun screen filters can be minimized. Hence, TEGO Sun T 805 offers an excellent way to provide good broad spectrum protection together with an aesthetically superior appearance. TEGO Sun T 805 is characterized by its high purity and an extremely low content of heavy metals. A pplication O/W and W/O sunscreens Sun protection for kids Face care products Pr ocessing hints W/O and O/W formulations are produced according to the common practice. To achieve the best SPF response and highest transparency, it is recommended to disperse TEGO Sun T 805 directly into the oil phase of the emulsion applying high shear rates. Due to the extremely hydrophobic character, TEGO Sun T 805 has no tendency to penetrate into the water phase. O/W Emulsions stirring - a a W/O emulsion can be formed in the heat. This can be recognized by a high viscosity and a transparent/gel-like appearance. This emulsion can invert phases during the cooling process to obtain a finely dispersed O/W emulsion. While following this routine it can be helpful to.reduce the speed of the homogenizer or/and to reduce the temperature during the homogenization process. Recommended usage concentration 1-25% TEGO Sun T 805 Packaging 315 kg pallet (21 x 15 kg) A pproval In Europe the Cosmetics Directive 76/768/EEC, Annex VI and in the United States the OTC Sunscreen Monograph allows the use of up to 25% Titanium Dioxide in sunscreen formulations. It is not manufactured under GMP conditions. A GMP consistent quality is available under the name of TEGO Sun T 805 G. Hazardous goods classification Information concerning classification and labeling according to regulations for transport and for dangerous substances protective measures for storage and handling measures in accidents and fires toxicity and ecological effects is given in our material safety data sheets. TEGO Sun T 805 has to be dispersed into the oil phase. Care should be taken, that the emulsion will not be excessively homogenized during the processing when common O/W emulsifiers are used, esp. if they are not - as an example - ionic or ethoxylated. The particle size of the dispersed oil droplets of these emulsions should be approx. 1-5.m. A stronger homogenisation may lead to conversion into a water-in-oil emulsion with coarse particle size. When processing with ethoxylated emulsifiers according to the following routine - the hot water phase is added slowly to the hot oil phase while Evonik Industries AG T EGO SUN T 805 April 2012 2/6
