About the AASW The Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW) is the national association for Australian professional social workers. We set the benchmark for professional education and practice in social work. We have a strong voice on matters of social inclusion, social justice, human rights and issues that impact upon the quality of life of all Australians. We seek a close and collaborative relationship with educational institutions, industry, government, client associations, and the community. The AASW acknowledges the critical importance of the contribution made by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander members. The AASW has National offices in Canberra and Melbourne and Branch offices in each State/Territory and a membership of 8,000 social workers. The Program The 2015 AASW National Symposium will engage participants in a program designed to profile practice excellence regarding social workers as leaders and change agents. It will bring together people across the professional spectrum (students, clinicians, academics, research and policy makers) and engage them in an informative program of keynote speakers, panel discussion, workshops and networking opportunities. A copy of the full program should be available in June, 2015. The Venue University of Sydney is one of 31 higher education providers who deliver an AASW accredited social work program. University of Sydney social work staff and students will be engaged in the Symposium. The 2015 AASW National Symposium subthemes include: Organisational Leadership (leadership, systems change, change management) Leadership in Social Justice and Reconciliation (social policy, activism, advocacy, achieving justice with First Nations people) Education and Research Leadership (professional development, education delivery approaches, field education. research and evaluation to improve practice, policy and education) Practice and Policy Leadership (clinical practice, community development, service delivery, social policy method) The Eastern Avenue Auditorium is a modern space with excellent facilities set amongst the university grounds.
Confirmed Speakers (Speakers may be subject to change) Dr Noritta Morseu-Diop Dr Noritta Morseu-Diop is a First Nations Australian woman. She holds a PhD in Criminal Justice and Social Work and has worked extensively in grassroots Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, and in non-indigenous communities, throughout the state of Queensland. Ms Tracey Howe Tracy Howe is Chief Executive Officer of the Council of Social Service of NSW (NCOSS). Tracy is a legally trained advocate with a commitment to human rights, addressing community disadvantage and gender inequality. In February 2015, Tracy won the Agenda Setter Award at the NAB Women s Agenda Leadership Awards. Rev. Graham Long After starting his career in social work, Graham trained for ministry from 1979 to 1982. Graham joined The Wayside Chapel in 2004 and under Graham s leadership, the organisation has grown substantially, now delivering six key programs and over 86,000 instances of support each year for people marginalised by homelessness, mental health issues and addiction. Professor Robert Bland Robert Bland is Professor of Social Work at the Australian Catholic University. He has worked in the mental health field as a social work practitioner, researcher and teacher over many years and has published extensively in this area. In 2008 he was appointed to the position of Queensland Health Chair of Mental Health at UQ and moved to the ACU in 2014.
Confirmed Speakers (Speakers may be subject to change) Dr Peter Munn Dr Peter Munn is CEO of Centacare Catholic Country SA. The agency covers a large part of South Australia and currently there are over 100 staff across the various communities where Centacare is based. Peter has had a long term commitment to rural communities which is evidenced by having lived with his family in Whyalla for several decades. Professor Cathy Humphreys Cathy Humphreys is Professor of Social Work at University of Melbourne. Her program of research crosses two major areas: children in out of home care; and domestic violence and family violence. Cathy was a social work practitioner for 16 years prior to becoming an academic. Dr Jackie Huggins Jackie Huggins AM, FAHA is an Indigenous Australian author, historian and Aboriginal rights activist of the Bidjara Central Queensland and Birri-Gubba Juru North Queensland peoples. She has published a wide range of essays and studies dealing with Indigenous history and identity. A/Prof Anthony Schembri Anthony Schembri is the CEO of the St Vincent s Health Network Sydney and has extensive experience in health services management. Anthony holds appointment as Board Director for the Garvan Institute of Medical Research, Board Director of the Eastern and Central Sydney Primary Health Network, Board Director the St Vincent s Curran Foundation and Co-Chair of Australian Catholic University/St Vincent s Nursing Research Institute.
