Regardless of your reasons, think about your future.

Genea Horizon is an egg freezing clinic in the heart of Sydney s CBD. The first of its kind and drawing on over 30 years of experience in IVF treatment, we offer clinical excellence at an affordable cost in an environment that understands and caters specifically for women who are considering their future fertility options. Our sister clinic Genea Fertility has always been at the forefront of treatment, innovating products and services to maximise the potential for patients to have a baby now or in the future.

Why freeze It can come as a surprise to realise that despite spending years actively trying to avoid pregnancy, the human reproductive system is not all that efficient. At the peak of fertility in a woman s 20s she has just a 25 per cent chance of getting pregnant naturally each month. A woman is born with all her eggs but the quality and quantity of a woman s egg supply rapidly begins to deteriorate after the age of 25. As age is a key factor in a woman s ability to conceive, it s important to consider if children are a part of the future. Many women choose to freeze their eggs because they re aware of the impact of age on fertility so want to give themselves options in later years. Whilst egg freezing doesn t guarantee a baby and is not an insurance policy, many women want to take control of their fertility, to the extent that s possible. Taking some control over the future can be empowering. Egg freezing provides many with a sense that they are doing all they can, investing in themselves and ensuring that when they are ready to have children, they are confident they considered all the options available to them at an earlier age. Egg freezing for many is an insurance against regret. Female age and fertility: What women tell us... I froze my eggs because I had just broken up with my long term boyfriend, knew my fertility was declining and wanted to do something to feel as though I was investing in my future, giving myself an option for down the track Dianne, 34.

When to freeze: What is the best age? As egg quantity and quality decreases with age, the younger you freeze your eggs, the better. Early 20s to early 30s will offer you the best chance of a baby in the future. The egg is the largest cell in the human body, full of delicate structures. Beyond the age of 35, a woman s eggs become more fragile and less likely to survive the freeze/ thaw process and create healthy embryos. Maximum chance of success decreases with age. Taking advantage of prime reproductive age is crucial but understandably in your younger years you are less concerned about your family building timeframe. Make sure you strike a balance that is right for you, consider how many eggs and the quality of eggs you want to freeze when making a decision. If you wait too long, you may be freezing your infertility. We recommend consulting a specialist as soon as you start considering egg freezing, so you can talk through options and timeframes with a doctor based on investigative test results, personal circumstances and your hopes for the future.

The egg freezing process Egg freezing is a method that s relatively straightforward. There are four simple steps. Pre-treatment investigations Before you meet with your Specialist it is recommended that you undergo the following tests to ensure you make the most of your first appointment: Serology Hep B, Hep C, HIV Anti-Mullerian Hormone (AMH) AMH is a hormone secreted by cells in the follicles of an ovary and is used to indicate ovarian reserve or egg quantity Antral Follicle Count (Must be conducted between days 5-9 of the menstrual cycle) An ultrasound of the ovaries and fallopian tubes to indicate how you may respond to treatment. Your GP can order these tests or visit our Genea Horizon Fertility GP. Then request an appointment with a Genea Specialist who determines your treatment plan by calling 1300 361 795. Counselling will also be offered.* Egg stimulation During stimulation we work with your natural cycle. Each month, eggs grow in fluid filled sacs (called follicles) on the ovaries however, only one egg will mature and be released. In an egg freezing cycle, you will undergo hormone stimulation over a period of approximately ten days to encourage a number of eggs to mature. This will involve some self-injections. During these ten or so days, you will attend the Genea Horizon clinic for blood tests and ultrasounds, all of which can be conducted early in the morning before your day s commitments. Egg collection Egg collection happens in Genea Horizon s Sydney Day Surgery at Kent Street and takes about 10-20 minutes. With local anaesthetic and intravenous pain relief medication, under ultrasound guidance, a needle is passed through the top of the vagina into the ovaries to empty the follicles. If you would prefer general anaesthesia there will be an additional cost. We recommend you take the day off work. Vitrification and storage Your collected eggs are then frozen using an advanced method called vitrification - essentially snap freezing - and safely stored. At Genea Horizon, we use the world s first automated vitrification instrument, Gavi to freeze eggs. Traditionally done by hand by scientists, vitrification is a time consuming process which requires a high degree of precision and is vulnerable to human and environmental variances. Gavi, automates and standardises key stages of the process and ensures eggs are consistently snap frozen, then stores them in a personalised Gavi pod until they are needed in years to come. Ensuring you have access to leading science is key when considering egg freezing. Genea Horizon draws on more than 31 years experience in fertility treatment to offer women the latest, most innovative technologies in the fertility sector. Protecting your eggs in optimal fluid, offering consistency in freezing results, storing your eggs in the ideal environment all maximise the potential of a baby in the future. Genea processes, instruments and products are sold around the world but are exclusive to our clinics in Australia. * Please note that Victorian Assisted Reproductive Treatment Authority (VARTA) requires all Victorian patients to be counselled prior to the commencement of any treatment.

Success Rates Although egg freezing has greatly improved over the past decade, it should not be considered an insurance policy. The reality is that freezing your eggs and storing them does not guarantee a baby. However, preserving your fertility through egg freezing can be one way of maximising the potential of having a baby later in life. Your age at the time of egg freezing is an important consideration and directly impacts the success rates of future IVF cycles using frozen eggs. The overall clinical experience has been that success rates with frozen eggs decline with maternal age (at time of egg collection). Limited data exists on egg freezing success rates as fewer than 10 per cent of patients return to use their eggs, such a small cohort doesn t provide a statistically significant reflection of pregnancy rates as a result of treatment however, it is important for you to consider Genea s IVF success rates, should you return to use your eggs in the hope of having a baby. The decision you make today will impact your future. As leaders in the IVF field, you can rest assured that should you require IVF, you re in the best hands down the track.
