When the holidays don t feel jolly For many people, the holiday season is full of ups and downs. Individuals without nearby family or those who don t participate in year-end celebrations can sometimes feel lonely or out of place. If the holiday season is challenging for you, here are some tips for navigating this time of year: Participate in activities as you feel comfortable. Don t feel obligated to be involved in events while at the same time remaining open to activities that might offer healthy connections with others. Take a break from the hustle and bustle. Allow yourself some regular quiet time to do something that energizes you. Volunteer your time. Volunteering is often a good way to take our minds off our problems for a few hours. Many places need assistance during the holidays, and helping others benefits both them and you. Start new holiday traditions if the old ones no longer seem meaningful to you. Live in the here and now. Focus on the individuals who are currently in your life and on what is going well in your life. Be conscious about your sugar and alcohol intake. Holidays bring lots of fun treats and desserts, but overindulging can affect your mood and energy levels. Stay active. Exercise has many emotional health benefits, including helping to lift mood and manage stress. If you find yourself struggling during the holidays seek out healthy connections with a friend, clergy member or mental health professional. Connecting with others can provide a needed boost during the holiday season. (Adapted from Work & Family Benefits, Inc.) Staying active and watching your food choices are especially important during the Holiday season. Use tricks like parking at the other end of the mall when shopping, taking the stairs instead of the elevator and never going to a holiday party hungry. (Source: WebMD) Fitness fact Stay committed to your health during the holidays The holiday season can be filled with joy spending time with friends and family, sharing gifts with those you love and being surrounded by positivity. For many, however, this time of year can also bring on a lot of stress as you try to balance your regular busy life with holiday activities like buying gifts, planning parties and events, and traveling to far-off places. Caught up in the whirlwind, you can easily forget about your own needs. Here are three tips to help you stay committed to your health during the holidays: 1. Partner up. Having someone to workout with can help you stay focused and take steps forward for your health during the holidays. Many people find that having a friend to exercise with adds a fun factor that is often missing when working out alone. Along with making exercise more enjoyable, workout buddies are great for planning workouts and holding each other accountable. So, grab a friend and workout! 2. Personal training. A personal trainer can also be a resource to keep you in shape and hold you accountable during the holiday season. Trainers have the knowledge and experience to help you plan workouts around your busy schedule; and, they can keep track of your workouts so that you don t have to! 3. Plan around it. Making your fitness a priority is the easiest and least expensive way to stay committed. One great way to do this is to schedule your workouts. Actually put them in your calendar and stick to them! Treat them like a work meeting that you would not miss. And, as potential conflicts come up, make a point to plan around your workout schedule, or reschedule your workout instead of skipping it altogether. Stop by the on-site Fitness Centers and speak with a health fitness professional to schedule your free personal training consultation today!
