Advances in Lung Transplantation & Course Description The course encompasses a multidisciplinary update which focus on recent advances in the fields of both pulmonary arterial hypertension PAH and lung transplantation. Recent developments in pathophysiology, clinical diagnosis and the burgeoning array of novel pharmacologic treatment options will be emphasized for the spectrum of causes of pulmonary vascular disease. In addition, newly FDA-approved pharmacologic and update on surgical treatment options for patients with chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension CTEPH will be reviewed. Recent advances in clinical success of Lung Transplantation have culminated in its application to an increasing spectrum of complex patients suffering from Scleroderma, pulmonary hypertension, prior malignancy, pulmonary graft-versus-host disease and pulmonary fibrosis. Patients previously denied for transplantation on the basis of cardiac disease, are now considered appropriate for combined procedures of cardiac repair concurrent with transplantation. Further, advanced pulmonary disease with cardiopulmonary failure may now be bridged with extra-corporeal membrane oxygenation ECMO to successful lung or heart-lung transplantation. Efforts to expand donor availability now encompass the novel breathing lung technology ex vivo perfusion and ventilation to optimize allograft function and potential suitability for transplant. To respond to an increasing emphasis for patients to receive concurrent medical care at a distance from the transplant centers, within community-based and managed care environments, the course will also provide to the Practitioner, a primer for diagnosis, management of complications, Immunology and pharmacology as relevant to such challenging patients. Target Audience This course will target practicing Pulmonologists, Cardiologists, Family Practitioners, Internal Medicine and other allied professionals. Goals and Objectives At the conclusion of this activity, participants will be able to: Recognize the latest advances in the field of lung and heart-lung transplantation, including: patient selection, detection of allograft rejection, immunosuppressive strategies, Immunogenetics and novel modes of allograft preservation. Recognize new pathologic mechanisms implicated in pulmonary arterial hypertension, state of the art pharmacologic therapies available for the treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension and chronic thromboembolic pulmonary arterial hypertension CTEPH Identify how these treatment strategies can be applied to clinical practice and improve outcomes.
