Welcome to the Macmillan programme of courses for the cancer workforce in the North West geography All All of our courses are fully funded by public donations. We are only able to offer these workshops, events and courses to you at no cost because of the huge generosity of our thousands of supporters, who every year do many things including running marathons and baking cakes to raise funds for us. We are grateful to each and every one of these people who enable us to offer you these opportunities. Late cancellation or non attendance to an event will result in loss of Charity money. In exchange for this free training, you will be asked to complete a simple online feedback form; this will be emailed to you after the training is complete. The information collected will assist us in identifying how effective the learning events have been in meeting participants needs. How do I apply? To book on to a course or for further details about the venue, facilities and timings, please contact your geographical L&D team on: Northlearning@macmillan.org.uk or 01904 756 432 Macmillan Cancer Support offers free training across the whole of the UK. Whilst we are more than happy for you to attend courses, as a charity we would not be able to contribute towards any travel or expenses associated with attending. All course places need to be confirmed. Cancer Awareness Non-cancer specialist health and social care workers, Allied Health professionals, Volunteers, People affected by cancer, support group members The aim of this one day free workshop is to raise awareness of the nature of cancer, prevention, early detection, investigation, staging and treatment options for cancer. Learning objectives: Describe the biological nature of cancer in basic terms Discuss the risk factors for developing cancer List the potential signs for common cancers e.g. breast, prostate, bowel, lung and skin cancer Discuss the staging of different cancers and investigations to stage and diagnose cancer Describe the main treatment options for cancer 10/04/2017 06/07/2017 10/10/2017 Preston Facilitation Skills Open to people affected by cancer, carers, volunteers, health and social care workers and allied health professionals who are interested in or currently involved in supporting people affected by cancer. To develop your skills in working with groups in a facilitative style For Health and Social Care professionals and volunteers who want to facilitate support groups or self management courses (e.g. the HOPE course) for patients and carers. User Involvement Development 2 day course People affected by cancer who either want to be or are already involved as a user representative, as either an individual or a member of a user group. This programme has been developed by Macmillan Cancer Support and aims to enable people affected by cancer to engage with the Health and Social Care systems in order to effectively influence decision making within cancer services. Sage and Thyme All staff working with cancer patients e.g. Health and social care and other professionals, support workers and volunteers A 3 hour free workshop on behalf of Macmillan Cancer Support and Sage and Thyme. Learning Outcomes: A memorable structured way for getting into and out of a conversation How to empower patients/carers who are worried or distressed Communication skills that are evidence-based 05/04/2017 04/10/2017 Preston Chester Further information about this course can be found at: http://www.sageandthymetraining.org.uk Listening and Responding Open to people affected by cancer, carers, volunteers, health and social care workers and allied health professionals who are interested in or currently involved in supporting people affected by cancer. People running cancer support and self help groups. We all like to think of ourselves as good listeners, but do you want to do more to develop your listening skills, so that you can better support people affected by cancer? This one day workshop will help you to identify the differences between listening and other helping strategies such as providing information and advice as well as developing and practising your listening and responding skills in a supportive environment. Buddying and Befriending People who are interested in the buddy/befriender role and people setting up buddying and befriending services, or those already part of existing buddying/befriending services who are interested in reviewing their practice. Do you, or would you like to, offer buddying or befriending to someone who is living with cancer? Are you planning to set up a service, or already running one, and want to ensure good practice? This free workshop will give you an overview of what s involved in buddying and befriending so that you are able to understand the role of a buddy/befriender, establish best standards of practice and be able to manage the emotional demands of the role. You will develop a greater understanding of what the buddy/befriender role entails and what constitutes best standards of practice. 11/04/2017 27/09/2017 Introduction to Palliative and End of Life Care Open to people affected by cancer, carers, volunteers, health and social care workers and allied health professionals who are interested in or currently involved in supporting people affected by cancer. This half day workshop will help you gain a deeper understanding of the issues and support needs for people who are in Palliative or End of Life Care phase of their lives. Loss and Bereavement Open to people who are interested in or are currently involved in supporting people affected by cancer through loss and bereavement This one day workshop helps you gain a deeper understanding on the wide range of losses and grief experienced by people affected by cancer. It helps you feel more confident in using your skills to deal appropriately with individual situations. It is important to understand that you will need to be prepared to explore and share your own experiences in this workshop. 16/03/17 28/06/17 09/11/17 Southport Chester Setting up and running a support group For people who are thinking about or who have just started setting up a support group This one day course is designed to provide you with information and good practice skills for running a cancer support group including setting aims and objectives for your group: Dealing with confidentiality issues, Bereavement support Who you could contact to inform them about your group 01/06/17 04/04/17 05/10/17 Chester Persuading and engaging people through effective reports making your case in Annual and other reports The aim is to develop the knowledge and skills of Macmillan professionals in how best to prepare effective reports, particularly Annual Reports.
