About the Simulator Caring for an ostomy may feel overwhelming. The Life/form Ostomy Trainer has been created to educate caregivers and patients with a stoma. This trainer will help by teaching step-by-step procedures for cleaning and caring for a stoma and changing the pouching system. The anatomy of the colostomies was carefully reproduced to provide lifelike appearance and functions. A soft, pliable material is used for the stomas in order to achieve the most realistic tactile sensation. The syringes included are used to inject simulated stool through tubing to the colostomy sites. Consistency of the simulated stool can be thinned by adding water. The colostomy sites can also be irrigated. The simulated stool may be reused. Dilation of the stomas can be demonstrated and practiced, but should be done just as carefully as if the simulator were a patient. All models are sold separately or in a kit. Functioning Ostomy Components (Infected, Normal, and Necrotic Stomas) (Per Trainer) 1 Corrugated Box 1 Syringe (12 cc) 2-oz. Simulated Stool 2-oz. Simulated Lubricant 1 Latex Glove 1-Way Stopcock 1 Easel 1 Manual Non-Functioning Ostomy Components (Prolapsed and Double-Barrel) (Per Trainer) 1 Corrugated Box 2-oz. If an assistant operates behind the model, they can add an element of surprise drainage to the ileostomy dribble as a more realistic learning experience. The syringe is to be used for administering synthetic stool in the colostomy. Clear water, or water tinted with food coloring for exact realism, can be used in the syringe. 2. The consistency of the synthetic stool can be made thinner by adding water. If exposed to air for a period of time, the stool will become thicker with loss of water content by evaporation. It can be reconstituted by adding water if not completely hardened. Most of the stool can be salvaged and reused. 3. The trainer has the tubing arranged in such a way that the synthetic stool can be forced out of the colostomy by using the syringe connected to the latex tubing by way of the stopcock. (See figure 3.) 4. The other end of the tubing is inserted into the back of the simulator and stops at the front of the stoma (may need lubrication to aid with insertion). (See figure 3.) The stomas have been designed to give a lifelike appearance and feel. Special soft plastic has been used to closely duplicate the human condition. If handled roughly, they will be damaged, just as they would be on a live patient. General Instructions for Use of Functioning Ostomies 2 1. A syringe is furnished with functional ostomies to supply realistic drainage and excretion in the colostomy. Fill the syringe. Insert the syringe on one of the ends of the stopcock. Ensure stopcock is in closed position. Place the other end of the stopcock into one end of the tubing. (See figure 1.) The unused end of the tubing goes into the back of the simulator. Turn the stopcock into the open position (parallel to the tubing) to push fluid to the simulator. (See figure 2.) An assistant is recommended to 5. Cleaning the skin around the stoma prior to use is recommended for good adhesion and to promote good preparation procedures. 6. Do not attempt to use a substitute for Life/form Simulated Stool. Product warranty is VOID if other material is used. 7. As with all Life/form simulators, this unit must be handled as if it were a real patient for the best learning experience and the longest service life.

Immediately after use, the tubing of a functioning simulator should be fl ushed with warm water. Cleanse the syringe and the stopcock to prevent adherence and drying of simulated stool. 2. Drain all fl uid as thoroughly as possible before returning model to corrugated box. 3. Normal soil can be removed with mild soap and water. Nasco Cleaner will remove stubborn stains. Apply Nasco Cleaner to the soiled area and wipe clean with soft cloth or paper towel. Allow to dry thoroughly before storing. Cautions Solvents or corrosive materials will damage the model. Never place models on newsprint or any kind of printed paper or plastic. These materials will transfer indelible stains. Ball-point pen ink will also make an indelible stain.
