Welcome to the Arts Access Data Project Introduction Thank you for participating in the Arts Access Data Project! The Arts Access Data Project is a joint effort by the Greater Pittsburgh Arts Council and the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust to gather regional data on how people with disabilities are engaging with arts and cultural organizations in southwestern Pennsylvania. This survey is completed by arts and cultural organizations and captures data on how many people with disabilities are using accommodations the organizations provide. Participating organizations will have access to all the data and be able to download reports specific to individual organizations. The shared regional data will identify organizations by name. Before you enter any data please review the guidelines and definitions below which are also available as downloadable electronic documents on the GPAC website. Tips: You only have to enter you contact information the first time you enter data, after that we will add a check box for your organization. Please make every effort to enter data according to the definitions below so we are comparing apples to apples not apples to pomegranates. To complete this survey you will need the following data points: How many wheelchair seats and companion seats were used by patrons; How many patrons received Braille, large print or electronic materials; How many patrons used the following accommodations: ASL interpretation; Audio Description; Captioning; Sensory friendly or Autism Friendly adaptations; Accommodations for people with dementia; Assistive listening devices; Whether these accommodations were provided as part of scheduled accommodated event; OR Whether you provided these accommodations at the request of a patron for a specific event OR If they were provided as part of a disability-specific outreach or educational program. 1
Definitions: Event: Any event hosted by an arts or cultural organization. Examples include a performance, film screening, concert, tour, class, workshop or lecture open to the general public.tickets may or may not be issued. An "event" does not include classes or outreach that exclusively serve people with disabilities (see definition of Targeted Educational Program below) but does include classes offered to the general public that a person with a disability registers for and receives an accommodation. Patron: A person attending the event regardless of the cost of the event. This includes people who have purchased their tickets at full price and those who received free or discounted tickets. Wheelchair seating: A designated space for a person who uses a wheelchair. or has a mobility impairment. The seat can be either removable or a transfer seat. These can be purchased, discounted or free. Companion seating: A seat adjacent to a wheelchair seat provided to a person/s who attend the event with a person who uses a wheelchair. These can be purchased, discounted or free. ASL Interpretation: Hiring a trained and/or certified American Sign Language interpreter. Captioning: Either live, real-time captioning or captioning of scripted event utilizing individual captioning devices or a single screen/display that can be seen by a portion or all of an audience. Includes both remote and on-site captioning. Assisted Listening Devices: Any device provided that amplifies sound for individuals with hearing loss. Audio Description: Live or pre-recorded description of visual portions of an event for people who are blind or have low vision. Scheduled Accommodation: An accommodated event that the organization selected in advance and promoted as an accommodated event. The organization may have chosen to provide this accommodation because people with disabilities had expressed general interest in an accommodated event but not in response to a request from a patron for an accommodation on a specific date and time. I.e. If you offer ASL interpreted performances on the thrid Sunday matinee of every show you produce it is a scheduled accommodation. Requested Accommodation: An accommodation at an event provided in response to a request from a patron for an accommodation on a specific date and time. The accommodation provided is in addition to the organization s regularly scheduled accommodated events. For example you have scheduled an audio described performance for Saturday at 2 pm but a patron called and requested audio description for the Friday at 8 pm performance. Braille Materials: Content of written materials is available in Braille for patrons who are blind or have low vision. Large Print Materials: Content of written program provided in large print for people with low vision. Electronic Materials: Materials provided in any accessible electronic format for people who are blind or have low vision. Sensory Friendly: Relaxed events open to all patrons which are adapted to welcome people with a variety of disabilities including autism spectrum disorders, sensory sensitivities and intellectual disabilities. Autism Friendly: Events open only to families and groups which include a person with an autism spectrum disorder or sensory sensitivity. Ticketing is limited to assure the most welcoming atmosphere for people with Autism Spectrum Disorders and sensory sensitivities. Education and Outreach Targeted to People with Disabilities: An educational or outreach program targeted for people with a specific disability. 2
