Erectile dysfunction (ED) is one of the most common forms of sexual dysfunction that affects men. 40% have suffered or are suffering from it as you read this. Otherwise known as impotence, it is defined as the inability of the penis to get or sustain an erection during sexual stimulation and intercourse. The worst thing is that there is a ton of misinformation surrounding ED and what causes it lies circulating that a lot of people believe. And there's a good chance that you believe these lies yourself. It's not your fault. A lot of the information out there has been spread for one very specific reason to make money for Big Pharma. These rumors and half-truths have been spread to line pockets and sell medication. Expensive drugs that can come with a whole host of nasty side effects. But here is where you learn the truth. Here is where the hard truth is exposed, and fact is separated from fiction. And we have to start by explaining how ED actually happens, and what its real causes are. MensLifeScience.com 4
How Does ED Happen? What normally happens when you are sexually aroused is that your brain sends signals to the penile nerves. These signals facilitate the release of neurotransmitters, triggering a rush of blood towards the penis. This causes it to harden as it fills with blood and is retained there for the duration of the erection. When you have ED, this is altered somewhat, as the signals are either interrupted or sporadic. Physical problems that affect your blood vessels could also play a part. Therefore, erectile dysfunction can be divided into two categories, namely medical and psychological. Causes of ED Psychological Causes: These are anything that affects your mind. There are a host of reasons why someone experiences ED, from your thoughts, feelings or social relationships, from performance anxiety, panic, mental disorders, job loss to low self-esteem and anything in between. The location of the act and the partner you're with can also have a significant impact. MensLifeScience.com 5
Medical Causes: Drugs, smoking, substance abuse and alcohol: Anti-depressants and nicotine have been proven to be some of the most prevalent causes of ED under this category. Smoking causes arterial constriction, alters sex hormones and reduces the quality of your sperm, all of which worsen ED. Too much alcohol can cause ED as well, especially in older men. Long time alcohol consumption has shown to have detrimental effects on the body and sexual function. Substance abuse can cause hormonal changes within the body, which negatively affect sexual function. Certain drugs also impair the vascular and nervous systems, both of which play a part in helping you get an erection. Cardio Vascular Disease: This might lead to a narrowing or clogging of the arteries in the body, and consequently, the penis, resulting in ED. Other problems associated with this disease, such as hypertension, can also contribute. Hormonal Imbalance: This accounts for a considerable number of erectile dysfunction instances. Testosterone deficiency leads to loss of sex drive, which negatively affects your chances of getting an erection. Others include pituitary tumors, estrogen or anti-androgen therapy, Cushing syndrome, Addison disease, etc. Recent studies also suggest that being overweight or obese can lead to hormonal imbalances such as these. Diabetes: Diabetic neuropathy, which damages nerves, including those around the penis, could be a major cause of ED. Studies have shown that 35% - 75% of diabetics have erectile issues. Cavernosal Disorders: The spongy tissue inside the penis that fills up with blood when you're sexually stimulated, resulting in an erection, is called the corpora cavernosa. 5% of men have a disease known as Peyronie s disease, which involves the growth of scar tissue and fibrous plaques on the corpora cavernosa. This scarring prevents people from getting erections. Surgery and Radiation Therapy: Surgery on the colon, prostrate, bladder or rectum could result in accidental damage to the nerves and blood vessels in the penis. Radiation therapies to treat cancers that affect area can have the same effect. Those are the real causes of ED. But there are a lot of myths out there that people believe, and that have no truth to them whatsoever. Those are the real causes of ED. But there are a lot of myths out there that people believe, and that have no truth to them whatsoever. It's time to dispel those myths once and for all. MensLifeScience.com 7
THE 7 BIGGEST LIES ABOUT ED So now that you know the real causes of ED, it's time to discover the biggest lies that the big companies want you to believe. None of the following supposed 'causes' of ED are true, and yet you'll hear them spoken as gospel. Knowing better will take you closer to preventing, or even curing, ED. Lie No. 1: Cycling Causes ED This one has been circling for a while now, but we're going to tell you that riding your bike in no way causes or contributes to erectile dysfunction or infertility. It was previously thought that biking put so much pressure on the family jewels that it resulted in damage and ED, but a recent study has proved this to be false. Over 5,000 riders were analyzed to discover if there was a connection, and none was found. Participants in the study completed questionnaires asking how many hours they rode per week and whether or not they had experienced signs or symptoms of ED in the last 5 years. No positive association was found between the two. This is good news for those of us that love to hit the roads and trails, as even spending more than 8 hours a week on a bike does not contribute to ED. Lie No. 2: Impotence is Solely a Man's Problem A lot of social pressures are put on a man who can't perform, and it is commonly thought that it is only his problem if he has ED. But the truth is that both partners experience issues if the man has it. A failure to communicate and denial can lead to a whole host of mental health issues that can actually make the problem worse, including depression, anxiety and lack of self-esteem for both partners. These issues then result in them avoiding sexual contact, which negatively affects both people as well, as they can feel unloved, unattractive or unwanted. It is therefore advisable for both partners to be open with each other, and communicate effectively. MensLifeScience.com 8
Lie No. 3: ED is all in the Mind This is another myth that is all-too-common, and means that many men don't seek help for their condition, believing it to be all in the mind and thinking of it as a sign of weakness. The truth is that while there might be some psychological factors at play, such as stress or depression like we mentioned earlier, in a greater majority of cases there is actually a physical cause to the problem. ED is often one of the earliest warning signs of dangerous underlying conditions, one of the most common being diabetes. They can also be a symptom of heart diseases such as hypertension (high blood pressure) or atherosclerosis, as well as hormone imbalances and neurological disorders, such as Parkinson s disease. This is why it is essential for you to see your doctor if you have ED. They can help you identify the problem and you can return to a more active and fulfilling sex life. Lie No. 4: Impotence is an Old Man's Problem This is one of the most prevalent lies that Big Pharma wants you to believe. Almost everyone believes that ED is just a normal part of getting older, and that old men just have to live with it. This couldn't be further from the truth. Although it is true that the risk does increase with age, it is treatable whether you're 50 or 80 years old! In fact, only 4% of men in their 50s and 17% of men in their 70s have complete ED. So rather than give up all hope if you experience ED during old age or worse, reach for the little blue pills remember that there are many other medical causes for it that you should look into first. Most importantly, check with your doctor and don't just throw in the towel for no reason. Your partner will thank you for your persistence. MensLifeScience.com 9
Lie No. 5: A Lifestyle Change Won't Affect Your ED A lot of people seem to believe that ED has nothing to do with their lifestyle, but this is far from the truth. In actuality, how you spend your day to day has a huge impact on ED. For example, research has shown that regular exercise for as little as 20 to 30 minutes a day can act as a libido enhancer, as well as improve your overall health. It increases the blood flow to all areas of the body, including the pelvic region. It can also build up your stamina, lower your blood pressure, relieve stress and help you look and feel better - all of which will improve your sexual performance. It's also advisable that you stick to a sex-healthy diet. Research has linked high cholesterol and obesity to ED. Both of these conditions can be improved by eating a healthy diet that involves whole foods low in saturated fat and cholesterol, as well as lots of fruit, vegetables and whole grains. Lie No. 6: Tight Underwear Causes ED Whether you're for the briefs or the boxers, this rumor is sure to have reached your ears at some point. It's a myth that has probably been around since man first slipped into a pair of tighty whities, and it has stubbornly refused to leave. We're sure it has gotten more than a few men worrying about their underwear. Well, fear not, because this is just another ridiculous lie. No matter how tight your underwear is, your ability to attain an erection will not be affected. But before you slip into your tightest pair, there's something you need to know. While your erection is safe, your sperm might not be. Underwear that is too tight pulls the testicles too close to the body, heating them up and eventually causing them to overheat. This will kill sperm. This doesn't happen right away, and typically only occurs over a lengthy period of time, but it's still something to be mindful of. MensLifeScience.com 10
Lie No. 7: Too Much Coffee Causes ED For most of us, the day begins with one (or maybe more) cups of coffee. No one can deny that it is one of the best ways to kick start the day, and some can't imagine a day without it. So the question of whether or not it causes ED was bound to have been raised at some point, with the old rumor mill going into over-drive as usual. While the lie is that too much coffee causes ED, research (read: science!) has found the opposite to be true. Men who drink coffee are actually at the lower end of the spectrum when it comes to developing ED. In the study that discovered this awesome bit of information, it was found that men who consumed about 85-170mg of caffeine (about 2 to 3 cups of coffee) a day were 42% less likely to develop ED. However, in a surprise twist, men who drank a lot more (171 to 303mg or about 5 to 6 cups a day) were only 39% less likely to develop ED. Apparently there really can be too much of a good thing. So it seems that regular coffee drinking helps, and not hinders, your sex life. Just don't overindulge. MensLifeScience.com 11
