Introduction Welcome to Shire Oak Science Club. The activities which you shall undertake over the next six sessions are as follows: Food Testing Electromagnets Making Crystals Cells and Daphnia Fruity Batteries Newton s Disc Along with doing various fun activities during the science club you will also be able to pick up stamps so that you can become a 5 star scientist. You will need two stamps for each criteria to gain the star. Maturity Health & Safety Practical Skills Good Scientist Attendance & commitment

Food Testing Food is made of many different chemicals which our bodies need to keep us alive. Can you name the main food groups? P C F V M W F We are going to test for protein and a type of carbohydrate called starch. We are going to use Iodine solution to test for starch and biuret solution to test for protein. Follow the instructions carefully and record your results below using a tick or cross. Food Protein present? Starch present? Which types of food contain protein Which types of foods contain Starch

Fact Sheet Our bodies need chemicals from all of the food groups in order to work properly, but some food groups are needed more than others. Protein: helps our bodies to grow and mend themselves Starch: used to give us energy over longer periods of time Sugar: gives us a quick hit of energy Fat: a small amount gives us lots of energy and is also used to keep our bodies healthy (some types are better than others) the rest is stored Vitamins and minerals are found mainly in fruit and vegetables and are essential for keeping our bodies fit and healthy. Design a Healthy menu for a day in the life of either: a 3yr old toddler or A premiership footballer

Electromagnets We are going to investigate how number of coils affects the strength of an electromagnet. Number of coils on nail Number of paper clips picked up 20 30 40 50 60 Plot a graph of your results (ask if you need help here)

Questions: a. What do you think would happen with 100 coils? b. What other things affect the strength of an electromagnet? c. Can you think of any uses of an electromagnet? Complete the wordsearch: There are 5 words to find. Making Crystals When an acid reacts with a base a Salt is made. Not all salts go on chips however! You are going to make some salt crystals. To do this you will need to follow the instructions given VERY carefully. Apparatus Bunsen Burner Conical flask Filter Paper boiling tube Sulphuric Acid Watchglass Tripod stop watch Mat funnel Gauze Copper Oxide Draw a labelled diagram of your equipment

Questions: a. What was the colour of the Copper Oxide powder? b. How do we know that a reaction happened? (think about colours again) c. What was made along with the salt? d. How did we get rid of it? e. Can you write a word equation for the reaction? To get my safety stamp I made sure that I did the following during the practical. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

Cells & Daphnia Using a microscope Observe the Cork Cell and draw what you see: Daphnia Look at the Daphnia under a microscope. Can you spot the heartbeat? Count the number of daphnia heartbeats In warm water? In cool water? What did you find out? Why do you think this?

Label the diagram of a Daphnia Ext Questions: What else could we investigate in Daphnia? Where do Daphnia live? What do they eat? What eats them?

Electricity from thin air (fruit actually!) We are going to investigate the best materials for generating electricity. We are going to do two different investigations to find this out. Investigation 1 Fruit Use an iron nail and copper electrode for this investigation to find out which fruit gives us the biggest voltage. Fruit Type Voltage (Volts) Which fruit would you choose to make electricity? Why? Investigation 2 Metals Use the best fruit from investigation 1 to help us find out the best combination of metals for making electricity. Metal combination Fe + Cu Voltage (Volts) Fe + Mg Mg + Cu Which metal combination worked best?

Questions: a. Which fruit/ metal combination would you choose to use to power an alarm clock? b. Explain why both investigations were fair tests. c. Suggest ways that we could expand this investigation Design an alarm clock to run on fruit.

Newton s Discs Can you name the colours of the electromagnet spectrum?! (the rainbow to you and me) R O Y G B I V Can you make up a rhyme to remember them by?! What happens when you spin the disc?

The electromagnetic spectrum is made up of lots of other types of wave as well as visible light. Can you match the uses with the types of wave on the spectrum? Gamma Rays Cook Food X-Rays T.V and Radio Ultra Violet Treat Cancer Infra Red Micro Waves Look at Bones Sunbeds Radio Waves Remote Control for T.V

Fun Science to try at home. Green Eggs You will need: Shredded red cabbage (boiled for 20 minutes) A frying pan Oil An egg Method: Squeeze the juice from the cooled cooked cabbage into a jug or beaker Heat the oil in a frying pan and begin to fry the egg until it is just starting to turn from clear to white Drip a small amount of cabbage juice into the setting egg white Wayward water You will need: A Plastic comb (not a metal one) Some hair Running water Method: Comb your hair (or someone else's!) Turn on the tap until you get a smooth steady flow of water (the thinner the stream the better) Place the comb near to the point where the water emerges from the tap The water will be attracted to the comb!

Cleaning up You will need: A handful of loose copper coins A can (or two) of cola A large bowl or glass Method: Fill the glass or bowl with cola Add your coins and leave overnight Wake up to beautiful clean coins The acid will have corroded the dirt off the coins Overreaction ADULT SUPERVISION REQUIRED You will need: A large open space A tube of mentos mints A 2 litre bottle of cola or other fizzy drink (diet is better) Method: Place the cola bottle in an open space so that it will not fall over Open the lid and pack of Mentos Drop all of the Mentos in at the same time (this is easier said than done!) RUN! Otherwise the volcano effect will cover you in sticky lava! Please enjoy trying these experiments but remember to ask an adult for permission before doing them.

Congratulations You have now successfully completed the Shire Oak Science Challenge How many stamps did you get? How many stars will you get on your Certificate??
