Youth Focus Groups
Youth Focus Group Perceptions What are your peers using? Like alcohol, and marijuana, and tobacco are probably the three main problems that we have around here. Why do youth drink and/or use drugs? There's been a lot of people who're like "I just want to see what it feels like. And then a lot of people want to fit in. I think that a lot of people like because depression is such big deal in our school. Why do youth decide not to drink and/or use drugs? I don't know, for me it's like you know I've seen what alcohol and marijuana do to people and I don't want to be like that, so that's why I don't do it. And like she said, my Mom would kill me.
Youth Focus Groups Recommendations: 1. You have to get to people before they've made up their minds. Youth recommended starting intensive prevention efforts in 6th and 7th grade and following up through high school graduation. 2. Youth want to hear from other kids about the consequences of alcohol and drug use. They felt that health information was not meaningful or relatable, but stories about what happened to people like them had the potential to change the way they think and act.
