TACKLING MALNUTRITION MALNUTRITION IS A SERIOUS AND COMMON PROBLEM IN HOSPITALS Abbott Nutrition is passionate about helping you tackle malnutrition. Studies have shown that when malnutrition goes untreated, it can lead to an array of negative outcomes such as: 1-3 Loss of lean body mass and strength (sarcopenia). Longer hospital stays and higher readmission rate. Higher morbidity and mortality rates. Delayed wound healing. Impaired immunity. Reduced quality of life. Increased costs for the hospital. A growing body of evidence suggests that improved nutrition care including oral nutritional supplementation results in substantial cost savings. 4 In fact, the benefits of a nutrition intervention include: 4-10 Improved wound healing. Improved immune function. Decreased susceptibility to infection. Shortened hospital stays. Reduced mortality rates. Lower costs of care. By prescribing the right nutrition at the right time, you can help: Improve nutritional status. 11 Reduce complications such as pressure injuries and infections. 12 Improve quality of life. 11 For the most updated clinical data on malnutrition in Canada and additional information on the Canadian Malnutrition Task Force, we encourage you to visit nutritioncareincanada.ca. TACKLING MALNUTRITION ABBOTT NUTRITION S FEED THE PATIENT INITIATIVE Abbott Nutrition s Feed the Patient initiative is defined as a 3-step approach to help identify and treat patients at risk of malnutrition. Find the patients at nutritional risk. Feed them targeted nutrition. Follow them throughout their treatment. FIND Malnutrition and loss of muscle mass can have serious consequences on patient outcomes including an increased risk of pressure injuries. 1 Effective screening programs have shown a 3-fold improvement in identifying patients at risk of malnutrition. 2 FEED Ensure your patients receive the nutrition they need. Abbott Nutrition family of products can help address your patient s specific requirements. FOLLOW Monitor you patient s nutritional status to help shorten duration of hospitalization, improve compliance and quality of life. 3-9 Implement a MedPass program, a proven approach to help patients maintain their nutritional status. 10 REFERENCES: 1. LEARN ABOUT scfos WHAT ARE scfos? Short-chain fructooligosaccharides (scfos) are nondigestible carbohydrates that are naturally found in common foods such as bananas, asparagus, and onions. 1,2 scfos are recognized as a source of dietary fibre by Health Canada 3 and are defined as prebiotics by the scientific community because they stimulate the growth of beneficial intestinal bacteria. 1 scfos AND THE GASTROINTESTINAL TRACT scfos are not digested in the small intestine, remaining intact until they reach the colon, where they are fermented by beneficial bacteria (such as bifidobacteria and lactobacilli) to short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs). 1,2,4 WHAT BENEFITS DO scfos PROVIDE? scfos can help your patients meet their daily fibre requirements. 3 SCFAs are the preferred energy source for cells in the colon. 4 Abbott Nutrition pediatric products containing scfos: PediaSure Plus (with fibre) PediaSure Peptide 1 Cal PediaSure Complete Grow & Gain Abbott Nutrition adult products containing scfos: Ensure Enlive Ensure scfos Fibre Ensure Pudding Glucerna Bar Glucerna Nutritional Drink Jevity 1.2 Cal Jevity 1.5 Cal Nepro Suplena TwoCal HN REFERENCES: 1. LACTOSE CONTENT OF ABBOTT NUTRITION PRODUCTS All Abbott Nutrition products, with the exception of Similac Isomil and our pediatric specialty products, contain some milk protein. With improvements in testing methodology, low levels of lactose in the products can now be detected. Most people with lactose intolerance can tolerate some amount of lactose in their diet. A review of the medical and scientific literature 1,2 suggests that most lactose intolerant patients could tolerate up to 6 g of lactose per serving. Abbott Nutrition adult nutritional products contain less than 500 mg of lactose per serving and are therefore suitable for most people with lactose intolerance. However, such products are not suitable for patients with galactosemia. Not suitable for galactosemia will be indicated on the label. For additional information regarding lactose, please contact our team of product specialists and registered dietitians at 1-866-767-7411, option 1. REFERENCES: 1. Suarez F. JEVITY 1 CAL Isotonic liquid formula with fibre INDICATIONS FOR USE Jevity 1 Cal is an isotonic, fibre-fortified, high-protein liquid formula. It provides complete, balanced nutrition for people requiring short- or long-term tube feeding. Dietary fibre helps people maintain normal bowel function. Suggested indications: For people requiring acute care or chronic tube feedings. For people intolerant to low-residue feedings. For supplemental or as a sole source of nutrition. Not suitable for people with galactosemia. FEATURES AND BENEFITS Complete, balanced nutrition. Provides 14.4 g of total dietary fibre/l. Dietary fibre helps maintain normal bowel function and may be useful in the dietary management of diarrhea and constipation. Isotonic formula is beneficial for those intolerant to hyperosmolar feedings, reducing the potential for hyperosmotic diarrhea. For tube feeding or oral feeding of patients with altered taste perception. DOSAGE CHART (PEDIALYTE ) This chart suggests the daily dosage requirements of Pedialyte in millilitres. The volume necessary is based on the child s weight (50-100 ml/kg 1 or approximately 1-1.5 Freezer Pops/kg). Pedialyte should be offered in small frequent sips every 15 minutes, increasing serving size as tolerated. Total daily intake should be adjusted to meet individual needs, based on thirst and response to therapy. The suggested intakes for maintenance are based on water requirements for ordinary energy expenditure. 2 Dosage chart does not apply to infants younger than 1 week of age. For children older than 4 years of age, maintenance intakes may exceed 2 litres (32 or more Freezer Pops) daily. If there is vomiting or fever, or if diarrhea continues beyond 24 hours, consult the child s physician. Body Weight Pedialyte ml/day for maintenance 3 kg (6.6 lb) 150-300 4 kg (8.8 lb) 200-400 5 kg (11.0 lb) 250-500 6 kg (13.2 lb) 300-600 7 kg (15.4 lb) 350-700 8 kg (17.6 lb) 400-800 9 kg (19.8 lb) 450-900 10 kg (22.0 lb) 500-1000 11 kg (24.2 lb) 550-1100 12 kg (26.4 lb) 600-1200 13 kg (28.6 lb) 650-1300 14 kg (30.8 lb) 700-1400 15 kg (33.0 lb) 750-1500 16 kg (35.2 lb) 800-1600 17 kg (37.4 lb) 850-1700 18 kg (39.6 lb) 900-1800 19 kg (41.8 lb) 950-1900 20 kg (44.0 lb) 1000-2000 NOTE: 4 Freezer Pops = 250 ml = 1 cup. Fluid loss in the stools should be replaced by consumption of an extra amount of Pedialyte equal to stool losses, in addition to the fluid maintenance requirement in this dosage chart. Pedialyte products are to be used with other appropriate fluids to help prevent dehydration. REFERENCES: 1. Leung A, Prince T.
