Message from Spikes for Autism Speaks Chair Dear Friends, It s amazing to see how far Autism Speaks to Young Professionals (AS2YP) has come since its founding in 2010. Over this time, the organization has grown to 60 active members and raised over $150,000 to support autism awareness and fund mission initiatives. Fundraising for those affected by autism is a fundamental part of what we do, and we re excited for you to consider partnering with our organization. On Saturday, July 26th, 2014, AS2YP will host the 2 nd Annual Beach Volleyball Tournament, Spikes for Autism Speaks taking place at Montrose Beach. This tournament will help benefit children and families struggling with autism, a neurological disorder that affects 1 out of every 68 children. In it s 2 nd year, we hope to advance the mission of Autism Speaks and raise $5,000. Spikes for Autism Speaks provides different levels of play ranging from beginner, intermediate to competitive. In addition to the competition, the event will host contests such as corn hole, tug-of-war, and an afterparty. Over 200 attendees between tournament participants and spectators are expected. We are planning for a great day at Montrose Beach! You can be a part of making this an incredible event, and I would ask that you join us in supporting Spikes for Autism Speaks. A reservations form is enclosed that outlines the levels of support and the ways we will recognize your gift. Please let us hear from you right away so we include your information on our website. I would greatly appreciate your support for the tournament on Saturday, July 26th, 2014. Should you have any questions or need any further information, please do not hesitate to contact Katrina Mesina, Manager, Field Development for the Chicagoland Chapter of Autism Speaks at Katrina.mesina@autismspeaks.org or directly at 224-938-9384. Thank you so much for your generosity. It is greatly appreciated. Sincerely, Kevin Arrogante Spikes for Autism Speaks Chair May 22, 2014
About Autism Autism is a general term used to describe a group of complex developmental brain disorders autism spectrum disorders caused by a combination of genes and environmental influences. These disorders are characterized, in varying degrees, by social and behavioral challenges, as well as repetitive behaviors. It is estimated that 1 of every 68 children and 1 of every 42 boys in the U.S. is on the autism spectrum a 78% increase in six years. Autism is the fastest-growing serious developmental disorder in the U.S. An estimated two million individuals in the U.S. and tens of millions worldwide are affected by autism. Although improved diagnosis and environmental influences are two reasons often considered, scientists say that 50% of the increase is unexplained. About Autism Speaks Mission At Autism Speaks, our goal is to change the future for all who struggle with autism spectrum disorders. We are dedicated to funding global biomedical research into the causes, prevention, treatments and a possible cure for autism. We strive to raise public awareness about autism and its effects on individuals, families and society; and we work to bring hope to all who deal with the hardships of this disorder. We are committed to raising the funds necessary to support these goals. Research Our goal is to improve lives today and transform lives tomorrow by advancing scientific research aimed at improving diagnosis, prevention, treatments and service delivery. Advocacy The focus of the Advocacy initiative of Autism Speaks is two-fold: (1) to maximize support and funding for autism research, surveillance, awareness and services, and (2) to work in state capitals, Congress and the courts for autism insurance reform that maximizes coverage for evidence-based treatments including behavioral health treatments. To date, 34 states have enacted insurance reform requiring insurance companies to fund autism-related treatments. Family Services Autism Speaks Family Services efforts are committed to connecting with and empowering individuals with autism and their families through resources to improve their quality of life today and into the future. Autism Speaks offers a number of tool kits for families with children with autism to help guide them through different stages of life. Awareness Autism Speaks is dedicated to raising public awareness about autism and its effects on individuals and families. Through outreach and programming efforts, Autism Speaks aims to educate people and communities about autism and what they can do to help those affected.
